    BlazBlue: Continuum Shift

November 27, 2009 - G-Star 2009, a Korean tradeshow being held in the port city of Busan, is a show focused mainly on MMOs and other online games. Almost everything on the show floor features either elaborate skill sets or small, cuddly monsters. So it was with great surprise that Charles and I stumbled upon the sequel to one of this year's top fighting games: BlazBlue. Titled BlazBlue: Continuum Shift, this ARC System Works fighter was nestled in one the smaller hallways of the convention center but featured a tiny crowd of devoted BlazBlue fans. Charles and I sat down at one of the free arcade cabinets and enjoyed some time with the two new faces of the BlazBlue universe.

Actually, they aren't "new faces" in the traditional sense. Gamers familiar with the original BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger storyline will recognize Hazama and Tsubaki as non-playable side characters. But in Continuum Shift, both characters will have the opportunity to enter the ring, along with all the old fighters we know and love.

Accompanying Hazama and Tsubaki are several other additions to the BlazBlue experience. Continuum Shift will feature brand new stages in which to compete, as well as new profile art for every character. This is very similar to how ARC System Works handled the various iterations of Guilty Gear XX when it was first released on the PS2, so players can expect several subtle additions to the core experience.

Actually playing as Hazama and Tsubaki was fantastic, but also extremely confusing. The character cheat sheets printed on the arcade cabinets were in Korean and we didn't have time to train with either fighter. That being said, my initial impressions of both fighters are very positive, as Hazama was a blast to play even without understanding his special moves. Entering the ring with his signature hat and coat, Hazama uses a massive bladed chain as his weapon of choice, which can catch opponents from all the way across the screen. This chain obviously serves as Hazama's Drive attack and can be thrown in multiple directions. It can also be used to send Hazama flying across the screen, similar to how Rachel uses the wind for sudden bursts of speed.

Tsubaki, on the other had, was almost unintelligible to me. Her Drive attack created an ethereal field around her character, but what this field does exactly is beyond me. Regardless, she was still enjoyable to play around with and her character animations -- like the rest of the cast -- were superb. I very much look forward to an extended play session where I can more accurately grasp the intricacies of her play style.

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift isn't officially confirmed for a U.S. launch, but we can only assume that the game will find its way stateside and land on the PS3 and 360. Hopefully we're right.

I thought this was like a 1.5/championship edition type thing instead of a sequel.

They may have labeled it wrong since it still sounds like it's in the same vein as all the Guilty Gear XX versions.

That's what I thought but looking it up in a couple of other places it's also refered to as a sequel.

          BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Revealed

Continuum Shift is very much like the Guilty Gear sequels on the PS2 -- it's more of an updated version of Calamity Trigger than a brand new game. With that said, Continuum Shift is still a big update and one that BlazBlue fans should be excited about.
In the game, players will be re-introduced to the lovable cast from the first title, though Continuum Shift takes place after the Calamity Trigger storyline. Apparently a strange event has caused some of the characters to lose all (or part of) their memory, so confusion will be running amok. Players will once again be able to play through a storyline for each character, complete with voice acting, branching paths and all the other fun stuff that we first saw in Calamity Trigger.

Continuum Shift also boasts a number of new modes, including the Legion Mode which is making its way into the PSP version of Calamity Trigger. In Legion Mode, players will fight a series of characters and expand their own party, growing more powerful with each passing match. There will be multiple difficulties for this mode and it apparently gets quite punishing on the higher settings.

Players will also enjoy a new Training Mode, which actually instructs newcomers on gameplay basics, as well as a Challenge Mode, which offers combo training to anyone interested.
Although there are four new stages, three new (confirmed) characters and some extra tunes, the original roster is back and the fundamental gameplay mechanics are largely unchanged -- which is good. But each character has obviously been tweaked and most of the old fighters now have an additional move or two added to their repertoire. For example, Tager now has a ground throw similar to Ragna's original technique.

Other tweaks include a huge change to Rachel (apparently she's much weaker and requires a turtling approach) and alternations to Noel (her standing C attack no longer hits on both sides). Additionally, Nu has been replaced by an identical character, Lambda, but she plays very much like her predecessor... except she's not as cheap. These changes aren't finalized, of course, as ARC System Works has plenty of time to make adjustments based on the arcade feedback from Japan.
The Guard Libra system has been modified from the original game and is now represented as glowing bullets that line the bottom of a character's health gauge. As players block without using a shield, these bullets vanish, until eventually the character's guard is broken if the bullets are depleted. The interesting thing about this system is that characters have a different number of bullets represented in the Guard Libra. So while Tager has a full set of these defensive icons, Rachel only has a few, because of her small size.

Furthermore, character-specific Drive gauges, which were present in the first game, are now located on the bottom of the screen, just above the Heat Gauge.

Style,graphics/animation,fantastic gameplay, voice acting,story/humor/characters and they even thought of mapping special moves to the D-pad because they know how much the 360 controller sucks for fighting games.

Also, it totally destroys all other fighting games with its online code. Feels like you are playing someone right next to you when you play online, no lag at all. Sad thing is when you lose, you have no one to blame but yourself.

By now you’ve probably seen a bunch of BlazBlue and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift trailers. This one is a little different, it has μ-12 in it.

These joke endings are great. Especially Rachel's,haven't seen them all yet.

This game is a steal. The most technical 2D fighter I have ever played. Love it.
