Let me attempt to explain why I see the difference in war games versus the 9/11 thing. Firstly, regardless of whether you feel that the war games are right or not, there are two differences in terms of timing. One, there's time itself. It is less than two years after the 9/11 attacks, while the most recent war games are about the first Gulf War, which happened over 10 years ago (and had far fewer people killed). Secondly, all of those other wars were over, even as they are painful parts of the world's past. We haven't gotten Bin Laden yet - the war against terrorism and Al Qaeda isn't over yet and we don't know when it will be.

Another point is that this game doesn't involve soldiers. WWII games, Vietnam games, all involve military operations and soldiers fighting wars. 9/11 involved innocent civilians being massacred on their own soil. I don't recall any WWII games where an untrained, undrafted accountant was forced to fight inside a Nazi concentration camp.

Third, there is the "revenge" factor in real war games. If I am a soldier in a Vietnam game, I can "kill the Viet Cong" to get revenge for if my brother was killed, etc. Wolfenstein 3D (which was not a war game, admittedly) has you killing evil Nazis and eventually Hitler himself, and the Conflict: Desert Storm game gives you the opportunity to go above and beyond what that war was about so that you can kill Saddam. The 9/11 game doesn't have you hunting Bin Laden in caves, it has you reliving a painful day, as a regular person, just trying to escape death at the hands of a terrorist. That's a big difference when your character is not armed a proactively cannot stop the "bad guys".

This is what I feel, anyway. I know that for kids I know from school, 9/11 felt different than it did for me in Washington or people in New York...not that everyone didn't think it was a terrible tragedy and a horrible day (I consider it the worst day of my life), but unless you saw the smoke, the hole in the side of the building, or even worse, it collapsing, and unless you knew someone who died, than you might feel differently than I do. I know when I drive past that side of the Pentagon I still get chills.

I do agree with you that yes this game is different than war games, i do agree that there are certain times for certain things and this isnt the time for a 911 game, i also agree that it is stupid to be playing the role of people trying to decide to jump out of a window or burn to death. but in this day and age its not outrageous as some people are saying, and people are doing worse things to try to make a dollar in this world. 9/11 is going to be exploited more than anything in the years to come. Im sure there will be more than 1 video game with a storyline involving 911 and there will probably be more than 1 movie as well. hopefully they wont be like this game. this game isnt stupid because of the isea of a 911 game but of accountants jumping out windows and what not. this game could be about anything and it would be stupid with that story line.
