    Rumor: Insomniac Games Going Multiplatform

This is rather interesting and this rumor was going around in the fall, and it seems to possibly be coming true.

Overheard at the Game Developers Conference: Insomniac Games has become a multiplatform developer. The company, best known for the Ratchet & Clank and Resistance franchises, is allegedly creating cross-platform software for both PS3 and Xbox 360, according to a trusted source who spoke with IGN under the condition of anonymity.

Insomniac Games has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with Sony, but remains an independent studio, which affords it the right to create games for any platform should it choose. The company is based in Burbank, California. Earlier this year, Insomniac Games expanded its resources when it opened a new studio in North Carolina.

Last year, an alleged billboard advertising Resistance 3 was said to have been erected during the filming of a forthcoming feature film titled Battle: Los Angeles. Details here. Given that Sony has in the past published the series, it seems unlikely that the first-person shooter -- or, for that matter, Ratchet & Clank, also funded by Sony -- would ever appear on a competitor's console. It seems much more likely that if rumors are true and Insomniac is working on 360, it is creating something altogether new.

We contacted Sony for comment but the company was unable to respond before publish time.

Insomniac Games' president Ted Price said only that the developer does not comment on rumors and speculation.

While it's IGN, and they should know that Sony owns both the Resistance and Rachet IP's, this has been an internet rumor for awhile.

People kind of picked them out after Bungie left MS, as Sony owns all of the IP's they work on.

I actually don't think they are as good devs people say they are anyway.

Ratchet and Clank games are for linear and for me, don't come close to the quality of the best 3d platformers over the years.

Resistance was always a B+ type game, fun but nothing special. So it wouldn't bother me if they left Sony. Sony may own those titles, but I doubt they would have sold much if they were 360 games anyway.

Yeah, Resistance is pretty much a Halo clone. It's decent, but it isn't up there with the better shooters on the PS3.

The rumor has become a fact.

          http://kotaku.com/5547071/ratchet--c...e-xbox-360-ps3

The next big gaming franchise from the creators of a decade and a half's worth of some of the Playstation's most beloved titles is coming to the Xbox 360.

Insomniac Games, the studio behind Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank and Resistance, unveiled a deal this morning with Electronic Arts that will put their still unannounced, undated next franchise on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Under the agreement Insomniac will retain ownership of the intellectual property.

"There have been a lot of great reasons to make games for the Playstation," said Ted Price, founder and CEO of Insomniac Games. "We have a wonderful relationship with Sony and will continue to work with them on Playstation titles."

While Insomniac Games' growth as a developer has been steady, it hasn't seen any big spikes, Price told Kotaku. Making a game for multiple systems means that the developer and its games will be able to reach a broader audience.

"We never wanted to limit ourselves," Price said. "People are inspired here by having the opportunity to try new things. (Playstation 3 shooter) Resistance was a chance to branch out and we will continue to look for those opportunities."

The latest chance is bringing Insomniac Games' upcoming, all-new franchise set in a new universe to the PS3 and Xbox 360. The title is currently in production at the company's Burbank studio, but Price remained tight-lipped about what it was.

"We've never approached any of the games we make as one-offs," Price said. "Our goal is to create a franchise."

Price declined to specify the sort of game it would be, adding that the developer won't be talking about it at this year's E3 next month.

He did say that Insomniac currently has "multiple teams working on multiple projects."

We've heard that Insomniac Games has agreed to produce at least one more Ratchet & Clank title and perhaps two more Resistance games. Price declined to confirm those details, but did verify that his company is still working on both franchises.

"We are going to continue to support Ratchet and Resistance," he said. "I think (PS3 owners) will be happy with what we have coming."

Rumors of Insomniac breaking their 16-year tradition of creating games exclusively for the Playstation first surfaced during the Game Developers Conference earlier this year. Craig Rechenmacher, vice president of marketing at EA Partners, said the discussions with Insomniac started "pretty organically."

"We have relationships with everyone," Rechenmacher said. "This is one we've had our eyes on forever."

"Our goal is to work with the best and brightest game developers"

Re: Rumor: Insomniac Games Going Multiplatform

Official as of this morning. Partnering with EA for 3rd party games. Ratchet and Clank, and Resistance are still Sony properties ala Halo staying with MS and Bungie going multiplatform. Again, this is a win win for all gamers I believe. The more bright young companies that can make games for all platforms, the better.

LOL! I'm surprised Flawless didn't beat us to the news. He needs his own blog with all the news he posts almost everyday.

This is not surprising at all considering that Bungie practically did the same thing last month. 360 owners will finally get to experience some of the best that Insomniac has to offer in terms of development since it looks like Resistance and Ratchet are staying Sony exclusive.

Yup, more companies need to do this. Reminds me of EPIC too; Gears is still exclusive, but Bulletstorm will be multiplat.

Re: Rumor: Insomniac Games Going Multiplatform

Following the news that Insomniac Games has signed a multiplatform deal with EA Partners, the company revealed that they are still to develop exclusive games for the PS3.

In response to a user question via Twitter, the company said:

“We are still working on PS3 exclusives and have a great and strong relationship w/ Sony + are committed to our existing franchises.”

No doubt more will follow, so keep watching.

There you go ppl hope that answers questions wheather Insomniac will stop producing PS3 exclusives!!.

I think that this is a good thing. With this generation of gaming costing so much and people not buying certain 3rd party releases titles in droves on one console I can see this becoming the norm as we head into the next generation of consoles. Insomniac lost a lot of money with the last Ratchet and it quickly dropped to $39.99 due to poor sales.

this is good news for fans of video games, bad news for 360 fans hoping they could finally play Resistance with a proper controller.

well 3rd party exclusives make little sense these days anyways, If Sony or MS is going to basically subsidize the game by buying its exclusivity and market it, they'll end up owning the valuable IP most of the time.

Insomniac saw interest in their games drop because Sony pushed them to make Ratchet and Resistance games as fast as possible, and they seemingly got in a rut creatively. Hopefully they bring some platformer lover over to the 360. EA, and the rest of us, really could do without another shooter.

We are excited to reveal our brand new universe and game during the EA Press Conference on Monday, 12:30 PDT, on SpikeTV
CVG had this to say a couple of days ago.

Rumour: Insomniac will reveal a new multi-platform third-person shooter - and make a big deal out of it...

CVG Reaction: You forgot about this one, didn't you? Multiple sources have told us that this is happening, and not to expect a direct rival to Gears Of War, but a game closer in style to Mass Effect 2.

The smart money's on a big reveal at the EA conference on June 6, and it's a bet we're fairly confident in. We'd wager that there won't be any game to play on the E3 show floor, as it's perhaps too early in the development cycle for that - but we can expect perhaps a sexy trailer, release info and details.

EA announced its ground-breaking deal with Insomniac - "for one IP and one game" - 12 months ago. The studio, best known for creating Sony-published titles, Ratchet & Clank and Resistance, would only reveal that it was bringing a 'brand new universe' to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
