something i can't get about certain companies in the video game industry

i have always questioned some companies "motives" and "reasons" for doing certain things such as the securing of certain licenses for games. but the biggest question i have is how can some companies (or company in this case) be so blind to not to supply the creation of a game with enough monetary input. the game i am specifically talking about is none other than the most hyped laughing stock of the video game industry called Duke Nukem Forever.

For those who don't know (but most of you do) Duke Nukem was already a successful gaming franchise producing popular hits such Duke Nukem 1,2 and 3D. The supposed 4th game in the installment Duke Nukem Forever was planned to be released in 1998 a whopping 12 years ago. I will not go into full detail but i will give more a summary

-basically release dates kept getting pushed back and back due to a multitude of problems. whether it was the gaming engine being used wasn't efficient enough to the developers not liking the way the game was turning out. Eventually the game was near the end of production (which means the game was nearly completed) when a spat over money ultimately doomed the game of ever existing. This occured may 6th 2009 ( a little less than a year ago)

Now i can fully understand a **** load of money was poured into this game( both the gaming companies and the producers of the game) and it was pushed back multiple times but why would the company in question allow this game to no longer exist after 15 some odd years were put into this game. Even the fanbase now so many years later, is still very large and if this game was released a heap of money would come flowing in every possible direction. so i ask to the operation sports community WHY? could some one please explain that to me because frankly i don't get it

I thought it was said, by the producers themselves, that the project manager or whatever kept scrapping the engine because he wanted to use the latest tech everytime it came out so they'd have to start from scratch constantly.

from what has come out from former employees, the producers were trying to make the game perfect.

If you really care about this you need to read the article in Wired about Duke Nukem.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Yeah, it wasn't money that was a problem for Duke Nukem, as 3D Realms put like 20 million of their own money into it over 10+ years. They also had cash coming in from the publishing deal for the game, which T2 is suing for. It was the horrible management that leads to this kind of development hell, which is only made worse by ever growing expectations from everyone.

People expect some epic best of all time game for 12 years of work, when it's not how it works. Reportedly, the version of DNF that 3DR was pushing to finish this year was only 2.5 years of work since the last restart. Too Human started off as a PS1 game in 1999, but went to the gamecube, xbox, and then 360 development. It still turned out to be shockingly expensive, had mediocre and dated gameplay, and was intended to be a trilogy.

Yeah, DNF was killed by project mismanagement more than anything else, and this article illustrates that perfectly.
