Xbox 360 packaging gets a reboot?

It looks like the 360 game packaging is to receive something of a visual reboot.

Focused at the top of the packaging, the 're-design' brings in some curvy (wavy) vertical green lines and features a lighter version of the Xbox 360 logo.

With Microsoft set to reveal Project Natal and the "future" of the Xbox 360 at E3, it may also be looking to refresh its visual branding in the retail space.

A number of retailers and publishers are using box art imagery that bares a markedly different "top strip," as seen above. The new box art can be spotted on a number of titles listed at GameStop.com, including Kane & Lynch 2, Mafia II, as well as a number of others. While retailers are known for creating mock box art in-house for promotional purposes, sources at publishers and developers have told us that they're seeing similar changes being made internally.

It should be noted that the green "wave" seen on the side of this box art is identical in style to what was used in Microsoft's invites to its E3 press events (seen after the jump). If this change comes to pass, it's not a huge deal, but it may signal a bigger effort on Microsoft's part to change consumer perception of its console.

Recently, Sony made a similar move when it introduced the slim PlayStation 3, changing its font and front-facing appearance of its retail box art.

They should use this refacing to make the boxes smaller too, ala PS3 games or blurays.

That would be the only change I would care about.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

The hell is the point of this?

This. Get rid of the big DVD boxes and also get rid of the lime green boxes. Make it clear like the PS3.

They won't though and this change is minimal.

Even though none of this matters, I prefer the PS3 box. Just much cleaner and no green!

I agree. Plus I was at Gamestop the other day and saw a few PS3 games that someone must have traded in with Blu-ray cases. They actually looked good with the Blue case.

              Hey, I like the green!

I agree on the boxes though.

I think because they are DVD's, they still have to use those boxes. I've never seen a DVD in anything but a standard DVD case, so I don't think that's going to happen. I would like to see a silver or a black box instead of green though.

If they can't do clear, black would definitely be cool.

there's no industry set standard or rule. If anything, it's just an accommodation for retail space.
