GS: What kind of game is this?
KI: I can’t say what it is exactly at this point, but the people who I want to play are the fans who played Mega Man games growing up. You will see a lot of '80s influence in the sound and artwork used in the game, and in this teaser trailer, you can see a lot of the '80s theme we are going for.

That was pretty damn awesome, but without seeing some gameplay, you can't really judge it one way or the other.

Inafune Teases Mega Man Universe Details

"We wanted to preserve as much as we can of the classic 8-bit Mega Man look and feel, while allowing players to project their own view of Mega Man," Inafune said. "We wanted to create a platform where players can play as their favorite version of Mega Man, or maybe another Capcom character, or something completely different."

Inafine said he wants all versions of Mega Man to be featured in the game, even the infamous ones. "We talked about how crappy the original package art was, but there's somebody out there that loves that one and probably wants to play as him."

Inafune also said that Universe will "unite Mega Man fans together all in one place."

Sounds like an online multiplayer confirmation to us!

Capcom ended the panel by announcing that there are more Mega Man titles being worked on this year.

"Mega Man Universe is going to be a great game," Inafune said. "But there are other things going on with Mega Man. This is a big year for me. You haven't heard the last Mega Man announcements for the future."

As for what's in store for the blue bomber, Inafune left us all hanging.

"I can tell you it's an oft requested thing you all want."

I'm very interested to see what exactly this game turns out like. I've always been a big Mega Man fan, but it was a little hard for me to get into Mega Man 9/10 because the d-pad on the 360 controller is so awful. I got Mega Man 9 and though I liked it, the d-pad was frustrating enough that it kept me from getting Mega Man 10. Hopefully Universe will find a way to somehow address that issue.

Yeah, this is the first thing that came to mind when i saw this thread. Is this a new MegaMan RPG game?? I loved the first one i think back on the PSX.

Prior to word coming out that he resigned:

The talented producer admitted this during an interview with a Japanese site, saying that he’s unhappy and wants to “retire early.” Inafune said, “I hate it! I want to retire early and take it easy.”

He addresses Megaman Legends 3, saying that it took so long to assemble the staff and to get the project approved that he didn't want to quit at this point, but he just couldn't continue anymore because he really hates his job and doesn't feel any joy or drive anymore.

Can you do what you want to do at Capcom?

I’d like to think so, but it’s becoming more difficult. I’m strong-arming a lot of things through, but I’m not sure how much more I can do. I don’t share the same management vision as the company.

I want to make games that travel overseas, but Capcom hasn’t taken globalization seriously. I want to study how Westerners live, and make games that appeal to them.

“I’ve been fighting for many years now to change these things one by one. But the business side is resisting change. They think developers are stupid and don’t understand business. That’s why I can’t be on the board of directors.

That’s the difference between Capcom and Nintendo. At Nintendo, 80 percent of the board is from development. At Capcom, it’s zero. All the business side cares about is protecting their own interests.”

Keiji Inafune remains critical of Japanese games, deems even Capcom 'complacent'

"I think Japanese gaming is dead. When I say these things, I'm called a traitor. But I love Japan. I want to save it." Keiji Inafune still hovers over the Japanese video game industry, defibrillator paddles at the ready. According to an interview with the New York Times, the outspoken designer and Global Head of Production at Capcom saw little at this year's Tokyo Game Show to change his pessimistic outlook on Japan's creations.

"I look around T.G.S., and everyone's making awful games. Japan is at least five years behind," he said. "It's like we're still making games for the last generation of game consoles." And Inafune's ire isn't just aimed at competitors -- he cited Lost Planet 2 as a clear failure to connect with audiences everywhere. "Lost Planet 1 was designed for the Western market. But the guys who made Lost Planet 2 were misguided. They made it too Japanese. They made it like Monster Hunter."
