Game looks boring, just doesn't mix well together.

    Love the art design.

Re: Street Fighter X Tekken (360/PS3)

      Eurogamer: Seth Killian Interview

You have a team-mate and you have to manage both of their life bars, so in that respect it's different from some other tag-team fighting games or a Marvel vs. Capcom, where if you lose one partner, the next one comes in by default.

If you lose anybody in this game you've lost the round. That's a throwback to a Tekken Tag system where you've got to keep both players alive. So it's dynamic as far as switching. You can't just focus on your one character.

There's also no built-in comeback mechanic, like an Ultra meter. You've got one bar, used for all of your different techniques, which is important. Beyond that, the Focus Attack buttons are now used to tag. You can use those tags in somewhat of a Focus-like way in terms of Focus Cancelling, so your Focus Cancelling skills will still be useful to you, but it's not quite the same thing.
You can just tag normally – it's pretty fast. But it's not completely safe. There is a little refractory period where you're vulnerable. So you want to find situations where you can tag.

One of the ways you can do that is by tagging in during a combo. You can be creative and cover your tag or, even in a block string, throw a fireball and tag behind that.
It's a bit more of an in your face game because the Tekken characters don't have projectiles, for the most part. It's more of a mid-range game than a full-screen game. It's more down and dirty, where you want to be up close.

Obviously the Street Fighter characters have projectiles and those can be used in the traditional ways to make interesting match-ups.
The touchstone the team is working from is this liquid feel, although I don't feel that's quite brought to bear in the game yet. It's getting there. You remember in Street Fighter IV they had this ink thing, which only emerged towards the tail end of the game. It wasn't very inky at the beginning. They're looking at different liquid touches as well as what you've seen, to match the gameplay with what you've seen in the trailers.
I don't think it's that different. Even the Tekken characters have Street Fighter-style special moves. A number of them. Those will all be there.

So in some ways you can think of them as Street Fighter characters, but they've also got these Tekken-like abilities. Kazuya can do some of his traditional tricks and mix and match with Tekken-style combos.

The way I push that into my Street Fighter brain is to think of them as unusual special move inputs, which is really what they are in Tekken. It's no different than a Street Fighter special move. It's just a series of buttons. Same thing here.

It's fun for me to watch people coming at it more from the Tekken perspective, because they slide into that bit of it easily. I've blocked off things I would associate with Tekken as, this is just an unusual special move input, rather than a whole new way of approaching it. I hope it works out well for both sides. It hasn't caused me any problems.

And there are a lot of hybrid combos. In Tekken, you never begin a combo by jumping in at somebody. That's a pretty big thing in this game. Jumping is still an important technique.

So, you begin with the jump in, do maybe some Tekken strings, cancel into a special move, followed by a Tekken string and something else from there. And that's not even to begin cancelling in between the two characters.

For me, in my little lizard brain, I've boxed the Tekken stuff as an unusual special move. But ultimately it's no different. There are a lot of similarities from a broad fighting game standpoint, or a game theoretical standpoint, between Tekken and Street Fighter, although the controls are quite different. That's what keeps people in their respective camps.

I've been pretty excited with what the team has done to try and bridge that.

Talk to the Tekken hardcore and see how they like it. They'll have a bit more of an adjustment than the Street Fighters. It's set in a primarily Street Fighter engine, but with plenty of Tekken flourishes that will make them feel right at home.

I wonder if they'll take away the SF projectiles for Tekken X Street Fighter.
Jack and Bryan should have them though.

Re: Street Fighter X Tekken (360/PS3)

            iplaywinner: Gameplay Details

            • SF x TK uses a 6 button configuration much like previous Street Fighter games. Short and Jab are throw, Medium Kick and Punch are Tag, and Fierce and Roundhouse is the universal launcher.
            • Combos are executed as chain combos (known as the Cross Rush according to Yoshinori Ono) for both Street Fighter and Tekken characters, with Tekken characters retaining many of their combos from the Tekken series. For instance, Kazuya's 1,1,2 works similarly as to how it does in the Tekken series. That said, Street Fighter characters can still execute many of their same link combos from Street Fighter 4 as well.
            • To start a launch combo, with most characters you will press something like Medium, Medium, Fierce, then tap Fierce again. Upon tapping Fierce a second time the game will cut to a quick launcher sequence and you will swap with the other character on your team. Works the same with Roundhouse.
            • You can bring in your teammate faster during the launcher by pressing the Tag buttons. This costs meter but allows for a different set of combos as the opponent will be higher in the air as your character comes on screen.
            • Launcher is unsafe on block, can tag in teammates even when it's blocked but you'll both be open to attack.
            • You can charge one special move per character and release it at anytime for varying effects. If you charge it fully, they will perform a super that wont cost any meter.
            • Many Tekken characters have some sort of "bound" or "launcher" special attack that allows them to extend combos. When used within in Tag combos, you have to save these bound mechanics/special moves for the end of the combo, and not the beginning. Otherwise, when you tag in your teammate they will be unable to follow up with an attack for some reason. Same seems to go for attacks that result in a wall bounce as well though this is unconfirmed.
            • A few Street Fighter characters such as Ryu have wall bounce attacks as well.
            • No comeback mechanics like X-Factor/Ultras.
            • As of now, once one of your character dies, you will lose the round. The game wont automatically switch in your other teammate if they still have life like say Marvel vs Capcom 3. You have to manually alternate between your two characters often and juggle their health to stay alive.
            • There is an "Alpha Counter" system where you can tag in your teammate while blocking. This isn't free though, as if you mistime it the opponent will be able to attack you. It seems like you have to wait for a string to end or an obvious gap to make this safe but it is still unconfirmed.
            Shoryuken Impressions

SFxT looks really nice. The facial models and animations have all been redone from SF4, and the Tekken characters look really great so far. They have a lot of character and personality in their moves. The backgrounds are pretty busy, and between rounds, characters have transition animations in which they move to another part of the stage.

When getting your hands on the game, the first thing you’d probably say is that it feels somewhere between Marvel and Street Fighter. Chain combos are super easy, and some of the moves are even more over-the-top than usual. You can cancel most chain combos into special moves as long as you do it before you reach a heavy attack. If you use a heavy attack twice at the end of a chain, it causes you to perform your tag-launcher. This puts your opponent into the air and forces you to tag.

The game ends when one character is KO’ed, but the coloring on the health bars makes it hard to notice when you are near death sometimes. Everything juggles in most cases. You can do chain combos in the air, land, and continue the combo. Throws work just like Street Fighter 4, but most of them have pitiful range by comparison.

Tagging is performed with Medium Punch + Medium Kick. While doing so, it is possible to have two of your characters get hit at the same time. You can use MP+MK like a focus cancel to cause a tag cancel. Doing so lets your new character move freely while the exiting character finishes his move.

For instance, forcing someone to block Ken’s Heavy Hurricane Kick, and then tag canceling it right away, lets you perform mix-ups behind the cover of the Hurricane Kick. This can be pretty scary. I tried the technique later with a blocked Hurricane Kick from Hwoarang. The kicker (ha ha) is that the final hit of Hwoarang’s special is an overhead. Performing a low attack while this goes off results in a Marvel-style unblockable.

The game seems to use gravity scaling to prevent super long combos. Gone are double motions for Supers. Instead, you typically do a single motion with three punches or kicks to perform one. They animate like Ultras, but can be cancelled into from normals and chain combos.

When you get knocked down, you can tag while you are on the ground. This technique, while unsafe, did seem really useful in a lot of situations in which sacrificing some health on your 2nd character could prevent the match from ending early. You can even tag cancel in the air.

The launcher attack, which forces a tag, can be used as an “Alpha Counter” from blockstun for one meter. These can be baited and punished, however, as all launcher attacks are absurd on recovery, leaving you open for days.

We are going to get more time with the game tomorrow, and we’ll talk more about character specifics then. Early on, I have to say that the Tekken characters are all extremely complex and super interesting, while the Street Fighter characters seem really straightforward and simple.

Tournament players got a chance to play it recently. Justin Wong shows the game off well.

4 characters fighting at the same time

IGN got their hands on some really cool footage of Street Fighter X Tekken. It starts off normal enough, but around the 22 second mark, you can see all four fighters beating each other up at the same time.
It appears that you can only perform this when your life is very low, and that this acts as SFxT’s only comeback ability. It lasts until your super meter runs out, or until you are KOed. Your two characters life bars average out and combine together during this. I’m guessing on this part, but the character that is lit-up appears to be the ‘target’, and be the character that your character or team will face. It appears that you can either switch the target manually, or that the game does it for you somehow.
