    Eurogamer Review - 9

If role-playing is to put you in the boots of an adventurer in a strange land and let you pick your path through it, then Dark Souls is a great role-playing game. If action is to test your skill in thrilling situations, then Dark Souls is a great action game. If adventure is to surprise and mystify you and invite you to uncover the secrets of a forgotten world, then Dark Souls is a great adventure game.

If entertainment is fun without failure and progress without pain, you'll have to find it somewhere else. But you'll be missing out on one of the best games of the year.

Might be the highest score I've seen from Eurogamer.

They loved the ICO and SotC collection too.

This game is that good though, if you are the masochist type!

Man, I have a $20 Gamestop gift card that wants me to drop dough on this game, but I need to be financially responsible >_<.

              EDGE - 9

Most contemporary games are unctuous, clingy suitors, welcoming players with fawning deference and open arms. Conversely, Dark Souls beckons the masochistic with its chilly indifference. If you steel your nerves and persevere, the loot you'll uncover is an adventure so exquisitely morose and far-ranging that it will tug at your mind insistently during the hours you spend apart. After more than 60 hours into our journey, an NPC clucks: "How do these martyrs keep chugging along? I'd peter out in an instant." We do so, quite simply, because other games feel comparatively bland, facile and unsatisfying. Few will complete Dark Souls, but that fact won't nullify the adventures they've had straining toward its elusive summit.

This generation I hardly ever "beat" games, in the classical sense of the word. Partly, because few games have gripped me enough to push me through.

Consider me gripped by the quotes above.

I'm torn on whether to drop $60 on this or Rage, and wait for the other until X-Mas. Been waiting for Rage for a while, but the Giantbomb QL and the reviews so far have pushed me back towards Dark Souls. I can definitely sink more time into this, but I just hope the game will keep my interest and the difficulty won't frustrate me into putting it down and giving up.

Yes it's a hard decision to make. After all the vids and reviews I put Demon Souls back in since I never came close to finishing it and I did enjoy what I played but the difficulty is still hard to get past as one mistake costs you so much. Instead of lowering the difficulty if they could just make you lose half or even 3/4 of your souls but to work for an hour and then face something you've never seen before and die in 5 seconds then have to start from scratch again can be hard to handle as that hour seems lost. Sure you know how the enemies fight and such but you can't rush through and come out alive. I do have it on pre-order and I'm lucky to be able to get Rage tonight as well, but definitely a tough decision to make.

Damn! I didn't know this was on 360 as well. My PS3 died months ago. I'm definitely picking this up soon. Demon Souls was incredible!

Ign has some strategy videos up if anyone gets stuck (and you will). I have avoided every video except how to get a special sword. I want to be surprised. IGN has called Dark Souls a grown up Zelda that is evil and I agree. That's the hook. I really find myself drawn in by the world and sense of adventure. I never finished Demon's Souls, but I played through a bunch of it several times with different classes and approaches. It's like the rides at Disney World...I know what's going to happen on the ride, but I enjoy the magic of it anyway.

I would take this over Rage any day, and get Rage discounted later on.

RPGs like this are a gem, and it is nice long game.
