Bobby Kotick wants to put cutscenes in movie theatres...

and charge $20 or $30 for them:

Activision is "likely" to look at the possibility of selling in-game cutscenes from games like StarCraft II as standalone movies.

"If we were to go to our audience and say we have this great hour-and-a-half of linear video that we would like to make available to you at a $30 price point or $20 price point, you'd have the biggest opening weekend of any film ever," Kotick said. "Within the next five years, you are likely to see us do that. Now that may be in partnership with somebody; it may be alone. But there will be a time when we capitalize on the relationship that we have with our audience."

He raised the possibility of selling the compiled cutscenes as digital downloads and possibly theatrical releases.

Its not a horrible Idea, I would rent these movies to catch up on a game I played a year prior when the Sequel comes out. Now Activision does not really have anything I would be interested in watching, Sony, Microsoft, and EA do have some stuff that would be worthwhile though...

You could get the full game for cheaper than watching a cutscene movie.

I think the Final Fantasy movie also showed that it's tougher to be that popular in the theaters...I'm not sure the video game cutscene movies would have the plot and whatnot that a normal Pixar type movie. They put so much time and energy into their animations and acting, video games don't.

The Market for this is not for people who want to put in the time to play the game. For Example, when Mass Effect 2 came out I wanted to watch the Story of Mass Effect 1 before I played 2 without sinking 30 hours into it. I think this is where they could make some money, the Mass effect Story is awesome and I could recommend a Mass effect "movie" to just about anyone. I Just played Alan Wake and that is another good example.

The problem that would exist is creating the action between the cut scenes, but Im sure the Developers could easily add in some sort of movie Maker to the game.

Im not going to sit here and say that everyone game could be made into a Movie but games like Mass Effect, Alan Wake, Red Dead, GTA, Dead Space, and Uncharted are good enough stories to be made into movies. Would I pay $20 for them? No but I would drop $5-7 on my Xbox to watch what I had played a year or 2 prior. Its also pretty good for games where the Gameplay blows and the Story is pretty good like Army of 2

I agree, Activision is not the company that comes to mind when discussing in game stories. They have a few but I would not pay money for anything Activision created.

I dont think taking these games to the movies would be a wise decision, Straight to DVD or just release them on Xbox or PSN.

you wouldn't want to see Halo:Reach in cgi or Gears of War 3. I think this is a great idea, and video games are starting to take over the entertainment industry.

Uhh, why would I pay possibly 30 bucks to see an hour and an half movie/summary of a video game made by people who are paid to make video games and are just looking to increase revenue when I can pay 10 or 12 bucks to watch a real movie made by people who are paid to make real films. Maybe Mass Effect is a great story to some people but there are 100 great sci fi movies out there as well that you can probably buy on DVD for 10 bucks.

Maybe it's just me I'm a big movie person but this just sounds crazy.

Youtube? Still requires time but you'd be able to skip the gameplay and go to the story bits.

Makes sense for video cutscenes to evolve to full blown videos with gameplay mechanics inbetween. Though most fall short, there are some cutscenes that blow movies away. I wouldn't pay $20/$30 for it, but I'd pay a ticket to see it early, before the game is released. But then, I might not be as interested in the game itself. Not sure how they do it and sell it and the game.

Haha all I meant was they are acting as if many cutscenes integrated into a full-length feature film is like some revolutionary concept, but animated movies have been around for fifteen years now.

I suppose if people like it, hey. But I don't understand the extra charge for it, I think that's what I was getting at more than anything else.

If anything it will end up like those Halo books except in movie form.

Didn't read those, won't watch these.
