Think again.
I'll be honest, I'm only just into the first level but if this is any indication of whats to come, they dropped the ball on this one.
Lets see. The city is very sterile and gives you a cardboard cutout/prop type of feel. Comes nowhere close to doing a good job of immersing you and making you think that you're in a wartorn city with walking tanks (wanzers) lumbering and battling about.
The strategy aspect has been completely removed, replaced with straight 3rd person shooter mechanics, which could've actually been great if executed properly. Why not combine the strategy aspect from the original title AND give you the ability to control specific units while taking or issuing orders to other mech units. Thats kind of a no brainer if ya ask me.
The explosions are generic, gives you a B movie feel. Explosions actually remind me of the old 8bit sega genesis games explosions. Maybe youtube the old afterburner game (remember that). Yeah. Looks better because its HD, but ...yeah.
Controls aren't bad at all, but that actually brings me to another glaring issue. You dont get that feel of being in a walking tank. Where's the weight, come on devs.
The rattle of your weapon and the missile salvos (sound effects and animations) are spot on, I'm loving the smoke trail it reminds me of macross/robotech, but how can a salvo of missiles not do anything to a building?
I see on the back of the box it looks like you can actually get out of your mech and battle on foot. Sadly, I dont think I'm going to make it that far. I'll post more after I've tried out the multi player and a tad more of the campaign. Initial impressions, I'd say pass at the moment. If you're a front mission fan I think you might be disappointed with this one.
