Would Collector's Edition (versions of games) sale more if DLC was included?

What I am saying is what if Collectors (Championship etc) Edition's of games sale more if they included future DLC? Most developers KNOW before release date that they are developing extra content. Would you pay say an extra $20 for the benefit of receiving ALL future content? Would it help sales of games?

I think it would and would actually be a pretty good idea. Some games offer this DLC free for those who buy it(alan Wake, Mass Effect) but that DLC is limited. It would also encourage the owners of the game to hold onto it a bit longer...

I don't know why they don't now. I got the LoS one yesterday and it says 'Downloadable Content' on the back of the box. Why not include it with the CE/LE whatever.

Of course they would sell more special editions, but then they would also likely lose more in DLC sales than they would gain in the increased special edition sales.

But if you are getting an extra $20, doesn't that cover the $9.99 that DLC cost? Most games have 1-2 DLC releases, very seldom do we get 3. And if there are 3, 1 is a huge one and the rest are small weapon packs.

That's all really dependent on the game, but still you are doing $20+ of DLC in addition to all the other stuff, plus the people who buy the CE are die hards who are going to buy the DLC anyway so you are sacrificing all these DLC sales just to garner a few more who very well may have bought the DLC (or the later edition with all the DLC included later) . So you are giving away sales and not really getting anything in return.

I bought the Mafia II special edition but not any of the DLC. Besides they keep rewarding the people that wait until they're greatest hits versions and the like by including all the DLC with those. They should be rewarding the people that buy the first day/week or buy the special versions. Well music games try to at least.

@goh, that's my point. Its almost like pre-paying for dlc. If they really want to make it value add, make it $15 on pre-orders.

Collectors Edition would sale more if they actually had good stuff in it like they use to during the 90s. In the 90s CE were worth the price because you got the following:

Box art exclusive to that edition
Lamented fold out map, one time I got a map that was cloth and was 4' by 4'
Character drawings
Trading cards

Now when you buy CE's you don't get crap like that anymore.

I remember in the 90s when they said limited or collectors edition, they weren't lying, after 2 weeks you didn't see that copy anymore. Now......I can still find limited editions and collectors editions of Brothers in Arms Hells Highway, NBA 210, Halo:ODST, Halo 3, COD4, MW2, Batman Arkham Asylum, etc in every store I go to.

Kind of takes the mystique away when they are massed produced. IMO they should be limited to a 1,000 copies.

The New Vegas one seems pretty limited.
On the other hand I saw a new copy of Madden 2005 CE today.

1,000 is probably TOO limited. I think something like what Mass Effect 2 had would be good. It was technically mass produced, but I don't think it's too easy to find a new copy of it anymore. So enough people are able to get it at release, and then shortly after it's discontinued. On Amazon a new copy of the collector's edition is running for $150.
