    Prey 2 (PS3, 360, PC)

I remember liking the first one way back when, so I'll probably check this out.

Bethesda Softworks today announced the development of Prey 2, set for release in 2012 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Development is being handled by the original team, Human Head Studios, and will utilize id Software's id Tech 5 game engine, currently being used for Rage.

"We are thrilled to be working with Bethesda on Prey 2," said Chris Rhinehart, project lead. "Prey 2 will provide gamers the opportunity to explore a new facet of the Prey universe, one that offers fast-paced action in an open, alien world. We're excited to show gamers the title we have been working on and hope they will be as excited by this title as we are."

Prey 2 was announced once before back in 2008 when the franchise was under control by 3D Realms and the Radar Group, a development company headed by Scott Miller, founder of Apogee Software.

In 2009, Bethesda Softworks acquired the Prey franchise.

Apparently this game is Cloverfield. Or at least that's what the teaser trailer feels like.

    Still pretty badass, though.

I threw up 10 minutes into the first one. Never played it again after that. I still have it so wonder if i should give it a go in case i was just sick that day or something.

I didn't find much wrong with it and I probably fall in the minority, but personally I thought it was good. The last game I actually played to the end since Halo 3.

          IGN Preview

It's no longer a linear tale with a few neat effects, but an open-world style game that mixes quests with a morality system and Mirror's Edge-esque movement capabilities.
In Prey 2 you get main missions and side quests with the help of your multi-functional visor. By scanning any bit of the environment the visor will highlight any non-player characters standing around as friendly or hostile or otherwise potentially worth investigating. If there's a group of burly aliens smacking around a skinny-legged weakling, you can scan your field of view to identify where it's happening. Then you can plant a bullet in the weakling's head or put an end to the thugs' mean streak with a few well-aimed shotgun blasts.

Scanning certain targets can also pop up small information windows that reveal a few tidbits of personal info as well as bounties.
Killian can run, slide into cover, vault over low walls, and jump across chasms and cling and hang on ledges. He has upgradeable hover boots too to cross wider spaces. While behind cover or hanging from a ledge, he can pop up to fire or blind fire, letting him fight even while dangling from the side of a building. There aren't any advanced maneuvers like wall-running, but what Killian can do seems to be more than enough to not only rapidly run and hop across environments, but up and down as well.

When a target takes off, you'll need to use all these skills to keep up. The visor will highlight the target even though walls to prevent total disorientation while speeding around.
From what Human Head showed off in the first demo the city appeared to be huge, with vast numbers of NPCs standing around and plenty of ways to navigate the environment, and there'll be three of these spaces in the final game. Earning money will be an important part of the experience, as it can be used to purchase items from vendors as well as in exchange for information. Of course if someone's demanding money and you don't have enough, you can always ready your gun, which is holstered by default, and threaten them until they spill what they know.

Work on Prey 2 began back in July 2009 and though the game is still in development, it looks really good already running on a heavily modified version of id's Tech 4. Prey 2 is a 2012 single-player-only shooter for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC and is definitely a game worth paying attention to.
          Eurogamer Preview

Prey may have been a classic run-and-fire FPS in some respects - one of those games where your weapon is always on-screen and your first instinct is to pull the trigger - but Prey 2 aspires to be an action-adventure. It even boasts light RPG elements for handling upgrades and gadgets. The act of raising a weapon now has to be initiated and it has ramifications in the world, where aliens cower, flee or perhaps raise their own gun in reply.
Combat also owes a lot to gadgets. These keep track of scanned enemies through walls, allow you to disarm turret gunners by hoisting them into the air on an anti-gravity field and let you fire rockets from your shoulder, amongst other things. They're activated independently of your main weapon, like the plasmids in BioShock 2, so combat remains fluid.

Not all of them are combat-related. There's also a hover gadget which lets you glide down to lower levels, Batman-style. (And "Batman-style" is usually a good phrase to have associated with your game, if nothing else.)

There are procedurally generated mini-missions all about the place - like an alien being beaten up by other aliens, who may give you some cash if you rescue him - and other varieties of sideshow.
Your behaviour towards the aliens you meet is noted by an explicit, Red Dead Redemption-style honour meter, although we don't see this in action. What we do see is that if you go too far you incur the wrath of local security - flying bagel-shaped drones with searchlights and bad attitudes.

As with Grand Theft Auto and other openworld games with policing elements, persistent offences garner more attention. There are also ways to lay low and reduce your profile.
Human Head says that Prey 2 will be a largely linear story within an open game - similar, in terms of how much choice it gives you, to something like Red Dead. Apparently it will take around 15 hours to rush through, more if you soak up the world around you. Other diversions include a range of tracking devices to uncover and disable, which add exploratory depth and a bit of narrative colour like the radio messages in Crackdown 2.

There's still a lot to prove, and in the eyes of fans who are upset by the absence of portals and the decision not to bother with multiplayer, perhaps a lot to answer for. In many ways, however, Prey 2 is refreshing.

This caught my attention for Prey 2...

Could Prey 2 Be Red Dead Redemption in Space?

Go ahead and throw pretty much everything you know about Prey off a roof. Human Head's sequel is a significant departure from the original. It stars a different protagonist, U.S. Marshall Killian Samuels instead of the first game's Tommy, and completely does away with the portals, resurrection mini-game, gravity switching mechanics and multiplayer.
              So... it's not Prey, then.

pretty much, why even continue with the franchise name then? Portals and gravity manipulation were only like the two most distinctive elements of the first game, but this will probably just end up being generic space shooter #18,534.

The first game was kind of unique, at the time, and the atmosphere stuff like the bar scene and Art Bell doing Coast to Coast AM segments on the radio was awesome.

Far from generic shooter. Open environment and much to the likes of Red Dead Redemption in space.

That really has not been done before... at all.

lol, the devs even drop numerous titles this game takes influences from, such as Mirror's Edge, Borderlands, Mass Effect, Riddick, Killzone, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, and Vanquish. Whatever helps hype people up.

It's still a ways off and this is just PR hype that every game gets, so it's hard to judge either way really. I'm just a cynical gamer. They're saying the right things on purpose, even touting the no MP or motion controls.
