Auto patch for Xbox to prevent Linux

    "Microsoft Blocks Linux From Xbox
Linux fans are today up in arms after Microsoft allegedly issued an auto-installing patch to the Xbox dashboard, which prevents the Linux operating system from being easily installed on the console.

Enthusiasts had previously found a way to legally install Linux via a bug in the game save function of EA’s 007: Nightfire. With this route closed no doubt many Linux fans will turn to more legally dubious ways of installing the software.

Ms can be a byatch but it's their product. I'm assuming this 'patch' is being installed on new units. If that's the case and it's not done through xbox live then I'd say to all the linux lovers, "deal with it, if you don't want them to put that patch on the xbox, then get an old one."

New units produced get the patch installed. Old units are automatically upgraded through xbox live.

Personally I could care less. Why is it that hackers always want to overide M$ products with Linux?

Although i can agree that some people just want to mod an xbox in order to pirate warez, the problem here is that you physically own the product. Whether you decide to strip the stuff out of the xbox and put a motor in it to make it move in the water, or gut it and place your hardware on it, people just dont like being told what they can and cannot do with a product they purchase. I am not condoning nor condemning anyone, as there are some who will use this as an excuse to do 'evil' things; and yet there are some people are, for whatever reason, just wanting to run an OS on the XBox.

Microsoft is basically 'telling' you that you cant do anything to the product that you bought from them. This area gets shady, cause it brings in IP vs the consumer's freedom to modify a physical product.

makes complete sense, Bacardi. I'm not into the whole Linux on Xbox thing, but I am a computer programmer, so i did see some of those people at U of M. I wonder if there's some propriatary hardware or something in the Xbox that MS doesn't want people to be able to get at. There's probably some underlying reasons why MS is doing this, whether it be to cut down on piracy, because though the Linux stuff is all well and good, that same breach in security could be used to mod the xbox or something. Something like that I understand, but if it's just because of Linux that's stupid. Let the techies have fun, it'll probably sell more xboxes.

Oh i agree. If M$ is trying to stop people from getting at their IP, then by all means patch the thing. M$, however, has been riding the DRM bandwagon as of late, and has now released a patch in regards to this very issue. I guess people are afraid that companies will eventually be able to tell you what you can do and how you can do it in regards to buying products.

Blah, rambling again. this is the geek version of a political debate.
