EA and Insomniac Games Reveal New Four-Player Co-Op Action Game Overstrike

Award-Wining Developer Makes its Worldwide Multiplatform Debut with an Explosive Spy-Fi Adventure

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- A shadowy organization has threatened to take over the world and there's only one team that can stop it: Overstrike 9. This afternoon during the Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), EA and independent developer Insomniac Games (creator of the Ratchet & Clank™ and Resistance™ franchises) announced the first details of the highly-anticipated game, Overstrike. Combining Insomniac's knack for imaginative weaponry with immersive and witty storytelling, Overstrike is a four-player cooperative action game featuring a team of elite agents called Overstrike 9. Comprised of an ex-mercenary, a lifelong thief, a gifted young scientist and a decorated detective, the members of Overstrike 9 are considered outcasts within their own organization, but are the best team suited to stop a global terrorist group from attempting to wipe out humankind. Overstrike 9 uses lethal teamwork and an arsenal of fringe-tech gadgets to infiltrate and destroy enemy strongholds. Overstrike marks Insomniac's first multiplatform release and will be available on the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system.

"Overstrike presents a unique blend of features that have long been a part of the Insomniac DNA: high powered gadgets, action-heavy gameplay, memorable characters in a deep and mysterious universe and of course a touch of humor," said Ted Price, founder and CEO of Insomniac Games. "And since this is our first multiplatform game, we're especially excited to introduce ourselves to a new audience — one which may not have experienced our previous games."

Overstrike will launch on the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. For more information on Insomniac Games and Overstrike visit www.overstrikegame.com.

They got my attention. Too bad Insomniac is now multiplatform, but that was probably the right move for them.

They will still work on Sony exclusives like R&C and Resistance, but also do some multi-plat titles.

That is a spectacularly well made trailer. Hollywood blockbuster good. If that was a movie, I'd want to watch it.

                  Re: Overstrike (PS3/360)

Gamescom: Insomniac on Making Xbox 360 Sing - Overstrike is using a brand new engine, and for this game, the PS3 and 360 versions will be created equal.

We caught up with the creative director of Overstrike – and nine year Ratchet & Clank veteran - Brian Allgeier today, and he gave us an insight into going multiplatform and how Overstrike's development is being handled. In short – never fear 360 owners: Insomniac may have a long history of making eye-popping games for PS3, but the studio has a new engine to ensure both the PS3 and 360 versions of Overstrike sing. Here's what he had to say:

"It's been a very exciting period for us… We're retooling our technology and our engine to support both platforms. I think a lot of people might make the assumption that we're developing for the PlayStation and then we'll just port it over to the Xbox, but that is not the case at all. We're developing one experience that can be ported to both platforms, and it will be the same experience.

"It's our own proprietary engine that we started developing three years ago. It's all built from the ground up, and certainly we have a lot of the same experts who developed our previous engine that are applying a lot of the same components and concepts in terms of developing it, but it's pretty much brand new.

"What players saw in the trailer is what our target has always been, so that's what we're planning on hitting."

                          Insomniac's Overstrike Becomes Fuse

During Ted Price's PAX Prime keynote, the Insomniac co-founder announced an all-new intellectual property, Fuse.

We happen to know that Fuse is a reworking of Overstrike, the 4-player co-op title that Insomniac announced during E3 2011. It seems that the title has been overhauled since then. Insomniac Games also tweeted out the above screenshot. The FuseGame website currently features a countdown clock that expires on September 12, so we should be getting more details then.

                          ...

It was going to be third-person, but VG247 says it's an FPS now.

Insomniac Games has renamed and reworked Overstrike, its new shooter in the works, which will from here on out be referred to as Fuse.
Fuse is a first-person, four-player co-op shooter and is without a release date at present.

Why would you get people excited for something new and different then redo it into tired cliche?

Sounds interesting, but aesthetically, I think it looks utterly generic.

                              Insomniac Games Lights the Fuse

Fuse, formerly known as Overstrike, is a third person, four-player cooperative game that centers around a volatile energy source that has fallen into the wrong hands. The substance, called Fuse, has been acquired by a terrorist organization known as Raven and Overstrike 9 has been hired to track down and stop it from setting off a deadly arms race.

You can play with up to three of your friends, and each member of Overstrike 9 has its own signature Fuse-powered weapon. Play as Dalton Brooks, an ex-mercenary who has a Mag-shield that acts as portable cover and unleashes a devastating blast that liquefies opponents. Take on the role of Naya Deveraux, who can cloak to flank enemies and fire out mini-black holes that implode its victims. As Jacob Kimble, you can keep enemies at a distance with the Arc Shot and shoot out charged bolts that chain react and fry enemies. Then there’s Izzy Sinclair, who can either launch out med beacons to heal teammates or fire her Shatter Gun to crystallizes and explode nearby threats. If you’re not sure who you want to play, you can use the LEAP feature to instantly switch to any available character. A good tactic when you’re in a pinch!

As you take down targets with both Fuse and conventional weapons, you’ll earn valuable points than can be used to upgrade your weapons and character abilities. You’ll earn more points on executing cooperative kills and these points and upgrades are beneficial across both campaign and another mode we’ll be revealing at a later time.

I’ve been at Insomniac for more than 13 years and was part of the development of the first Ratchet & Clank for the PS2. It’s never easy developing new gameplay, an engaging storyline, and new technology from scratch. But at Insomniac right now, we’re having a lot of fun both evolving and playing Fuse. I believe the telltale signs of a signature “Insomniac” game are in full force. We’re diligently working on making sure each character and gameplay mechanic is satisfying to play. Our story is filled with intrigue and contains exciting plot twists with a touch of that classic Insomniac humor. And there won’t be a shortage of replay options thanks to our LEAP feature.

We hope you’ll feel the same way when Fuse launches in March 2013!

                              Previews:

                              The Verge

Price says the weapons of Fuse are designed to encourage players to cooperate without "forcing it."

Players will also be encouraged to cooperate by taking advantage of the game's "Fusion Mode," a team power-up that unleashes the full power of the each member's Fuse weapons. After building up a meter, players can kick into Fusion Mode, sending the entire team's weapons into overdrive. Weapons will fire faster, inflict greater damage, and exhibit powerful new behaviors. As a bonus side effect, engaging Fusion Mode heals the entire team, particularly useful when your teammates on the verge of death.
What then for the player who prefers to play this four-player coop game solo? Fuse's "Leap" system is Insomniac's answer.

Leap allows players to bounce back and forth between the four playable characters, giving them immediate control of your AI-controlled allies with a simple button press.
As the game developed, Insomniac says the lighthearted visual tone of Overstrike didn't match what it was ultimately becoming: a mature, coop shooter with a more serious story centered around the Fuse element.
                              IGN

I played the same 10-minute demo four times when I saw Fuse, once with each character. Each attempt played out radically different than the last. The characters function the same -- everyone is fast and nimble, so they hop up walls or over cover with admirable grace -- but their differences encourage separate play styles. As Naya, I would climb and traverse the environment (something anyone can do) to hack cameras I would later crystalize as Izzy. As Kimble, I’d hang back and pick off turret gunners and blow up walls, while storming into the fray as Dalton before sneaking through sewers changed the pace and feel of the same scenario. The common thread in each play through that impressed me most, though, was that everyone needed to adapt to the situation to keep each other safe. If you're not looking out for your friends, using their skills to your advantage, and capitalizing on your alien tech's powers, you're dead.
