Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (PS3/PSVita)

    IGN Preview

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is an evolution of the franchise according to developer Sanzaru Games. This isn't a sequel from Sucker Punch -- the folks who made the first three Sly games -- but a reimagining of the world. Don't panic: this isn't a reboot of the third-person platformer. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time picks up after the events of Sly 3 and finds the cast living happily ever after. However, when Bently discovers that the pages of the Thievius Racoonus (the Cooper family book of secrets) are disappearing, he rounds up the gang and head out on a time travelin' mission to set things right. Again, this is an "evolution" of the franchise. The same voices for Sly, Bently and the rest are back, but the characters themselves have gotten older. Sly looks bigger, Murry's features are more Hippo-ish.

When I say "reimagining," I mean it in the way that Sanzaru has started from scratch and only looked to the previous games as inspiration while building its own legacy. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time looks like an HD version of the franchise, but there's more verticality, more to explore, objects that are harder to find, and tougher puzzles that have you switching between characters.
Still, the addition that has me most interested in Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is replayability. The old games were great, but you could steamroll through them and never really have to double back. Here, you're going to come across areas that you can't get to -- that you don't have the skill set to open. This is because of the time traveling nature of the title. When you hop to a new era, you'll eventually unlock a new costume from that time period. This suit will grant Sly a special ability that will be not only be key to passing the challenges of the level but also key to doubling back to beaten levels and snagging goodies like in the LEGO games.

Yeah I'm looking forward to it as well as long as it is similar to Sly 2. I thought Sly 1 was pretty boring when I played it on the PS3 Collection game, but Sly 2 was a lot of fun. I'll have to play through Sly 3 before this one comes out, but I'm sure I have plenty of time for that.

OK, so what's the big deal about the Sly games? I have never played them because they didn't look very interesting to me but I know they have a pretty big following. What makes them so appealing?

Sly and the Family: Stone-Cold Killers
A Ninja/sushi chef, and a Robin Hood lookalike. Sly's got one hell of a family tree.

Every time Sanzaru shows off Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time the game looks completely different. The variety of gameplay and the unique feel fit with the Sly series' history of switching up the gameplay for each new iteration, which still keeping that core Sly Cooper experience. Thieves in Time doesn't come out until fall, but feel free to start getting psyched for it, because it's fun.

I'm not impressed...I loved the original games, and purchased the HD collection, but this looks like more of the same. They need something else to sell me on it, not an ultra-high res copy of the original intro.

Plus this looks more like the third game to me which I wasn't a fan of at all.

Looks fine. I would have gone in the direction of cleaning up the art style into a more animated look, instead of just littering the place with extra stuff, but it works.

                      IGN Preview

I was excited for Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time before, but something about the game on the Vita really clicked for me. Switching to Sly's Robin Hood-like costume, I'd shoot arrows and steer them through the air with the Vita's tilt controls, and it was fun. Sure, the Vita version drops the action from 60 frames per second to 30, but Thieves in Time still looked pretty and as colorful as the console experience.

With cross platform compatibility no less. Intriguing indeed.
However if they want me to buy both copies, they're going to need to have a far better deal than the MLB the Show deal. I mean it's MLB, it was totally worth it, but with Sly? Well, lets just say the grinding out Sly 3 for platinum left a a bit of a stain I still can't seem to remove.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time Delayed to 2013

Sony has announced that Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will now be released in early 2013. Despite previously being slated for 2012, Sony broke the news that Thieves in Time will now be coming next year in the game’s newest gameplay trailer, seen below.

A reason for the delay hasn’t been revealed, and it’s currently unknown if this will affect the release of the Thieves in Time demo, which was scheduled to be included with the Ratchet & Clank Collection later this month. We’ve reached out to Sony to clarify and will update with any comment we receive.

Earlier today, Sony also revealed that buying Sly Cooper (and other games) on PS3 nets you the Vita version for free via its new Cross Buy promotion.
