Online Games Where You Serve a Specific Role?

Something I'd like to see more of in online gaming is where each participant has a specific goal to follow through with that helps with the overall efficiency of their team's overall goal. Especially with co-op games where maybe you're on a team of 4. The example I tend to think of is with a game placed in space where you may have one guy at the controls, another maybe navigating, and then another as a gunner etc. Each player can not move out of that position and has to focus on his specific role.

A game like Rainbow Six encourages this but I often find that many ignore the concept and just go at it "guns a blazing." But to me that really offers depth to where you have to refine your skills and work as a member of a team. I know the concept is out there. All major first person shooters let you choose specific soldier titles with their respective equipment, but a game where it's more individualized and you truly are a "specialist" in your position is really appealing to me.

are there games like that out there?

Brink. Each mission has several objectives and each objective requires one of the 4 classes.

I definitely can see where you're coming from, but I've had the same issues with people just ignoring assignments and going "Rambo."

The closest thing I've come to was the Battlefield series, although my experience was mostly with 1942. At least in that you had some people that were Air support, some that were out to set charges on bridges, and grunts on the ground.

Even sports games have this to an extent with online team play, although sometimes it starts to look like a little league soccer game with the "swarm" around the ball/puck.

Unfortunately I don't have any great recommendations, but I just wanted to put in my two cents.

Thanks, I'll have to check it out.

True with sports games too. It can become very playground-ish. With a sports game it would be nice to team up with your friends and play through a franchise against the AI. Each player has one position with secondary positions that he can play at times. All of you would be on the same team and progress together as time goes on.
