    Ingame advertisements

The times are changing and advertising is everywhere, you can't even go ten steps in a city without some form of advertisement, and things such as magazines and websites most likely make a big chunk of money off all the advertisement sells off.

Now the question arises, as advertisements become more apparent in games (sports games being a good example).

Do you feel that the money made from licensing deals should in effect make games cost less to the buyer? It's without a doubt big companies are paying big money to get their logo or slogan into the game. Should we as consumers reap some of the benefits in the form of a cheaper game, some free DLC or something? Or should we accept that it's just capitalistic marketing?

I'm going to try and throw a poll in here but keep the flames down and if this is in the wrong section I apologize ahead of time.

I want to vote yes, but there is something keeping me from doing so. It's like I have an explanation for why not somewhere buried in my mind, I just haven't found it yet.

It's a way to subsidize some of the rising cost of development. We'll never see any benefit of an ad filled game trickle down to us. They can even push it as being "more realistic" than having generic billboards and ads in games.

That's pretty much my belief. It sucks, but it's also something we will never see the numbers for. Gaming companies won't let it slip neither will those buying the advertisements.

It could be used for subsidizing but in some cases, where the same engine is being used, or there is few licensing issues (both require a lot of money) than shouldn't there be some benefits?

I believe that it's a some case for the most part, if a game is pushing advertisements at you, than yes you should be discounted or given some kind of incentive. If it's passive, like a billboard or not intrusive, than I don't care. But if they are throwing it at you, then yes you deserve something, just because it's a persistent advertisement. Hell in relation to the reeses ad, they could've gave us a free DLC or something. (I guess they did they gave us that relatively pointless recruiting aid).

Because in the PGR example that McDonalds is actually there as they lovingly recreated every street in the cities, same with the FIFA one. It's just realistic in some cases. The unrealistic ones I almost never see since I'm not connected online most of the time when playing.

            Re: Ingame advertisements

I remember when they started putting ads up in the "Hangar" in NBA Live 10. My buddy usedto joke how it would take for trades to show up in roster updates but the Hangar had a new Ad every day.

Sorry back on topic. Sure game company are exploring every way they can to make a buck. Also other companies are looking for new ways to reach their consumers. Companies like McDonalds don't wait for game companies to call to sell them ad space. They are out there knocking on the door. Obviously no way to know for sure but I wouldn't be suprised if the first bit of advertising space ever sold in a game was because a company approached the game company about placing an ad not vice-versa.

I think it would depend on where and how the add is used. If its something that doesnt really change anything like NCAA 12 then I have no problem with it costing the same but if they are gonna put like a commercial or something that you cant skip then I would want a cheaper game.

Of the examples provided, the only one I have a problem with is the FPS screenshot.... just looks so out of place.

Doesn't bother me until it starts appearing in scenarios where it doesn't make sense. Like a Pepsi poster somewhere in Dragon Age.

The funny thing is PC people all the time put ad packs into their sports games to get the real look and feel.

Billboards and stores doesn't bother me. Posters for other games or ads that are out of place contextually in the game are distracting.

Sports is all about subsidizing with advertising and endorsements, so it has never bothered me with those types of games.

Some Ppople are missing the main topic of the thread. The thread is not asking if it bothers you that there is advertising but asking if we should get some type of kick back from games having advertisement in them.

I think maybe some free DLC sponsored by so & so would be cool. I know that development has gotten a little pricey but some type freebie would be nice.

                        If they're intrusive ads,yes.
If they're actually there in real life,no.

We don't get kick-backs from others who use advertising to alleviate some of their costs, I don't see why videogames would be any different.

The marketing professional in me says "no." If companies are buying ad space, that means they see value in it ... and an opportunity to get the right message to the right target audience. The game is a vehicle to deliver that message, and it shouldn't underwrite the price, which is ultimately determined by production costs and market demand.
