    Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Valve announces CS: GO for PC, PSN, and XBLA

Targeted for release via Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac) in early 2012, CS: GO will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched exactly 12 years ago (CS beta 1, August 1999).

CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year's PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo 2011.

For more information, please visit the CS: GO Steam page.

Hey, Valve - make this cross platform like you did Portal 2 and I'll buy it in an instant.

God yes. I used to play the CRAP out of CS back in the day. Just seeing the words de_dust brings the fuzzy memories back.

Very excited to hear about this. I have actually made threads in other forums about this years ago. I wonder if the gameplay will hold up and if they plan to update it.

I really hope they don't dumb it down since it's going to be multi-platform.

It's Valve. Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 1/2, and Portal 1/2 were all built for the PC first. I highly doubt they would shun the PC crowd considering that's where their fanbase is.

I'm looking forward to this, but it would of been more 3pic if the next HL was announced. Don't get me wrong though, I still love me some new CS.

Agreed. It's only a matter of time before Valve is like "Oh, we uh, we're releasing Half Life 2: Episode 3. Just saying"

Yeah, the funny thing is the "Episode" system was meant to release the story in small bits, but more often. After two episodes it disappeared...great commitment.

Loved Counter-Strike back in the day, but it's had it's time.

Can't go back to it anymore.

Yeah, I'm just wondering how dated Counter-Strike's mechanics are by today's standards. Obviously the series still has its following.

I wouldn't say the gameplay model is dated, it's just that you can only play de_dust so many times.

Time to move on and let it go.
