Re: Defense of the Ancients 2 (PC/Mac)

Had my best game in about a dozen. Things just kind of 'clicked' and I did fairly well, didn't feed and we won!

I'm about 100 games away from having a clue but I am happy to learn. It is funny watching rookies make the same mistakes I was doing a few days back and punishing them for it.

We need an OS team for sure.

I am Home Alone this weekend as the wife is going on a girls weekend. I plan to devote about 35 hours to Dota2 or LoL. Do you recommend doing coop vs bots or just jump in the deep end? I have half a clue, I know to try not to feed and will pick a ranged class to give myself some breathing room in my early matches, but based on my track record in similar circumstances I am prone to becoming entranced by tooltips and not keeping up at first (Sins of a solar empire is a major fail for me, I STILL dont knownthe tech tree).

Anyway look for me. I know you are on my Steam friends list, I think I appear as The508 there.

I'd probably do 1 vs bots first and see how that goes. If you think that's enough, jump in to real games, if not stay with bot games at first. Even though the core is the same as LoL, it's quite a different game. It's harder and less forgiving than LoL for sure.

Coop with people you know is always an advantage. You see organized teams stomping public games because they can sync their abilities and gank like crazy. More vocal the better.

Would love to get a team for the week/weekend as I'm off the entire time!

I should be able to hop on this weekend. I am a LoL veteran but have very limited DOTA experience. I mainly play support in DOTA, but I also like to play Shadow Shaman and Wind Runner. Xavier I know I got you on my friends list so I'll keep an eye out for you.

Played some good matches with nyjets today. A little bit of team work makes all the difference. I prefer support myself as I learn the ropes. Remember: Don't feed.

                One question:

I know in LoL that the suggested items the game presents you with buying, well....a lot of them suck. Does DOTA do a better job of suggesting the appropriate items for your hero?

A lot of them are good suggestions actually. Except for magic wand. It suggests that for every single hero and it's just not worth it on most, so ignore that. Otherwise, it does pretty well.

Item buying is a hard thing to learn. I've played so much LoL and I'm still tweaking my item builds even on my longest-tenured characters.

When it comes to DOTA, I can admit I have no idea what to do when it comes to item buying. I've only got about eight DOTA 2 matches under my belt so I'm still a greenhorn.

Is item buying done in game or Real Money.

There's both. The item buying he is referring to is the actual in game items your hero gets, kind of like gear in Diablo 3. This is done with in game gold.

There's also items that can be bought with real money, but they are purely for cosmetics only and have no other influence. Also, these items can be randomly gotten and through good performance.

I'm having a little trouble figuring out the inventory management when your champion isn't personally at the shop. I think I understand using the donkey, but there is a button next to the courier button (lower right of the UI, has a picture of a face and an arrow on it) that I don't know at all what it does.

Does anyone have enough of a handle on it all to explain it to me? LoL and Demigod was pretty simple, you bought stuff, and if you bought something that had sub components they went away when you bought the higher level item.

Also, are the secret shops and side shops stocked with the same or different items?

The courier shows the avatar of the character who is receiving a delivery. That way you can manage when someone else is using the courier and if you need to wait until they are done with it.

Secret shops have different items and you have to physically be there to receive them.

I am terrible with item management though and it is one of my weakest parts of the game.

Good read on what the beginner experience with DOTA 2 is like.

Dota 2 is the among most gut-bustingly hardcore games in existence today. So how long does it take to actually get good at it, starting from nothing? I had to f
