    Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown announced for consoles!

    Finally! After being exclusively in the arcades of Japan for over 14 months, today Sega has officially announced a port of Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown developed for the Xbox 360 and PS3. This game is going to be released strictly as downloadable content off of Xbox Live and PSN respectively during the summer of 2012. There will not be a version available on a disc for retail. Gamespot has a VF5 FS announcement article posted along with a video trailer plus a Q&A section uncovering a few more details.

    Shameless plug: If you want to see VF5 FS in motion check out my OS Arena. I have plenty of good matches posted.

    Great news. Virtua Fighter 5 is one of the first games I got for my PS3 back in 2007. Now, I can finally go online.

        For those who are interested,

        Sega brought a VF5 FS arcade cabinet to the PAX event in Seattle today and will have a live feed going on showing off the game from 6pm-8pm local time (9pm-11pm ET). Click on the link below to see it when it begins in a little over an hour from now.

        Watch it Live on IPLAYWINNER.TV

        And for those who live out there in the Seattle area, the VF5 FS will be at the PAX throughout the weekend and will then be moved to Seattle Gameworks nearby.

          How would one describe Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown? What do I need to understand about VF5 to become better at it?

          Thanks

                Of all the fighting games out there this one always seems to fall through the cracks. At least here in the States.

                In Japan, there is always quite a few people lined up to play this.

                Such a technical game, with tons of moves. I was never really good at it, but I had a lot of fun playing it.

                  LOL! It's actually P+K, P+G. But yeah, it's a very cool move for Goh that sets himself up to bring the pain.

                  Hey Sausage,

                  The core gameplay elements of the VF series has always evolved around a rock-scissors-paper type concept, and it's no different for VF5. To keep things simple, the three core principles to remember are:

                  * strike beats throw
                  * block beats strike
                  * throw beats block

                  Of course there are some unique factors to consider such as range of attack and position/stance of your fighter and your opponent whenever going for a strike or throw, but I'm just listing crude examples here to make a point.

                  Another core gameplay element to know is that every strike attacks at one of the three levels of an opponent: high, middle, or low. Conversely, there are two levels that a player can choose to block any attack: high or low. As far as defending against strikes keep in mind that...

                  * blocking high guards high-level and mid-level strikes
                  * blocking low guards only low strikes

                  There are a ton of other intermediate and advanced stuff to learn like evades, low throws, hit throws, throw escapes, fuzzy guarding, guard-breaking moves, reading frame data, etc., but what I mentioned above will help you get off to a good start toward getting your feet wet playing Vanilla (original) Virtua Fighter 5 in preparation for the release of Final Showdown next year. Be sure to check out VFDC to research these type of things along with movelists, strategies and advice for every character. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions to those who are frequent visitors of that site.

                  And lastly, a streamed replay of the PAX event that took place Friday night is now available at IPLAYWINNER.TV.

                    It has a pretty good training mode too. At least regular VF 5 did and it came with matches to watch on the disc.

                      The Training mode for Vanilla VF5 was decent but it pales in comparison to the many types of features and stuff the Training mode for VF4 Evolution had. Many serious long-time VF players want to see VF4 Evo-style Training mode added to the console versions of VF5 FS, and word has already gotten to Sega about this along with a number of other proposed features.

                        It sounds like this will be roughly the equivalent of VF4Evo, and basically a souped up version of it's predecessor.

                        I'm very curious to see what the new single player mode is. Hopefully it'll be something engaging, like a story mode or something, some reason to keep on fighting beyond your standard fight game modes.

                          A visitor and participator at the PAX convention in Seattle last week (better known as Zero-chan) has posted a preview article of VF5 FS. It's a great read that's mostly aimed at casual fighting game fans who are not familiar with the game or the series in general.

                            Wow... fighting game fans who live in or near the Bay Area are in luck.

                            IPlaywinner is hosting a Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown tournament at the Southtown Arcade in San Francisco, CA on February 10. It'll be the first public tournament for VF5 FS that's hosted outside Japan.

                            Hopefully more tournaments like this will be hosted throughout North America leading up to the console release of FS.
