    NES/SNES Gaming Thread

Wasn't sure where to put this - here or consoles, but it's game related, so I figured here. I did a search and found nothing, but surely I can't be the only one here to still plays the good old NES/SNES.

I've got mine set up, since I got moved, and I'm having a lot of fun with it. Bought Ninja Gaiden the other day and it brings back some memories. As I kid, I couldn't even beat the first boss - as an adult, playing it again for the first time in around 2 decades, it took me quite a few tries. Got to stage 3, but got my butt handed to me before having to give up and go to bed.

I forgot how hard some of these games where - Castlevania, Zelda, Ninja Gaiden, Robo Warrior, TMNT - they didn't mess around with these games back then; no wonder Nintendo Power was a necessity in any household with an NES.

Anyway - why not some classic console talk? I'm sure we've got some guys here to still play these. Genesis is welcome too - although, I never really played it.

Earthbound was the ****. I love that game, but I have never beaten it.

You're right about the difficulty too. Part of the reason I haven't beaten Earthbound is because it gets so difficult as you progress. It's something you really don't see with today's games.

The only games today that compare in terms of difficulty are Demons Soul's and the upcoming Dark Souls.

Ninja Gaiden was the game that gave me fits. Wizards and Warriors I won the same day I bought it. Opposite extremes.

I found Wizards and Warriors kind of tricky, myself. I was playing it the other day - and just parts like jumping up through the tree with those damn spiders that fall out of nowhere were giving me headaches.

Another really tough one was Ghosts 'N Goblins.

Earthbound I need to start up again. I never played it as a kid, but I've got it now and I'm still early on. I haven't played it for quite a while because I packed it all up until we got moved.

Ghosts N Goblins was the hardest game to beat that I can remember. One game that I did beat that took forever was Blastermaster.

It used to be so much more difficult to beat NES games.

I've beat Super Mario 3 with and without cheating.

It's easy to cheat with whistles, but it's not as much fun.

Ghost and Goblins & any Ninja Gaiden were some of the hardest games to beat. The respawning in Ninja Gaiden was RIDICULOUS!!!

Oh god, I think I have PTSD from Castlevania 2.

I still have that. May need to fire it up later to relive its awesomeness.

Yep, games sure were much more challenging back then. Try playing BattleToads without the warps. Especially the Turbo Tunnel and cycle stages - those were pure reflex and memorization through lots and lots of deaths. Still one of my favorite games on the system.

Or for RPG's, how about Dragon Warrior when you cross a bridge and find yourself surrounded by enemies whose level is twice yours. Have fun getting knocked back to the starting point castle when you die (which will be often). And then there's the original Final Fantasy where you actually had to choose your targets carefully, because if you killed one enemy another character was targeting, they'd just swing at air. I actually HATED this game at first because of "ineffective", with my little nine-year old mind not comprehending why all my attacks were missing.

The NBA Jam and NBA Showdown tournaments my friends and I would have would stretch into the wee hours of the morning. 8 players, double elimination tournament with awards given out to MVP, Offensive, Defensive player of the tournament.

                          Classic stuff.

Yeah, I played all those games & understand every frustration. Haha. Ninja Turtles was pretty damn hard too.

Turbo Tunnel is actually one of the easier Battletoads levels.

The Ice Cavern level right after it is way harder. Some of the middle levels are also kind of easy, but from the Elevator level on, that game is ridiculously hard.

Furthest I've ever gotten is level 9 Terra Tubes.
