Mechwarrior reboot finally past red tape

According to tech news site Fudzilla, the Mechwarrior reboot that has been held up becuase of legal issues is finally getting the green light. It looks as though it will be PC only at first with the console version sometime after initial release for the PC. Here is the article:

Will be a PC exclusive to start with After years of going back and forth, it would appear that a Mechwarrior reboot is going to happen after all. With legal wrangling to acquire the right to produce a new title and trademark disputes settled, things are in place to proceed with Piranha rumored to be...

They have been working on it behind the scenes so the wait is really not that long - Late 2012 release

Funny - I was thinking of old games the other day and MechWarrior came to mind. I never really bought one - but I had a few demos and they were cool games. I remember them being fairly popular and was wondering where the series went.

Re: Mechwarrior reboot finally past red tape

The reason for the legal delay is the roboot brings back the original days of Battletech before it became know as Mechwarrior. The original Mechs had a very strong resemblance to the Mechs in the popular 80's animated series called Robotech(one of my favorites as a kid). Back then FASA corporation, the original creator of Battletech, had a license to re-produce the mechs from Harmony Gold(who were the creators of Robotech).

The company behind the Mechwarrior reboot, Smith & Tinker, got served with papers regarding the IP rights and licenses lapsing. In Smith & Tinker's defense, they thought they had gone through the proper channels.

They have since worked out an agreement and things are proceeding as planned. My take is it probably would not have taken as long if it were not for Warner Brother's planning to bring a Robotech live action movie to the big screen. There may have been too close of a resembalnce to the movie and the game and that is probably what was at stake. The movie is barely at pre-production so I would not expect it for a while, according to sources.
