Yeah, no doubt. There are definitely some good old games on that site. I am looking at Ultima 7, Starflight 1 + 2, Fallout 1 and 2, Ice Wind Dale, Planescape: Torment, and Star Control.

that 50% off sale will be ****!

The other great thing about GOG is that all of the games work on Windows 7 32 and 64 bit and they even preinstall dosbox so that really old games will work.

Theres also this new collection that collects both the Baulder's Gate games with expansions, the Icewind Dale Games, and Planescape in one package. Its only 20 bucks and Ive seen it at Best Buy and at Gamestop. Amazon has it as well.

Damn I missed that Witcher deal by about 30 minutes. I saw the ending date was the 10th, and didn't even process the time it said was GMT. Looks like I am waiting to find a deal another time.

Re: You want some great PC games for Christmas?

I picked up BG2 and IWD2 awhile ago and had a real hard time getting into them. I am a recent RPG junki of sorts. Kinda started with ME2, and have been going back trying a bunch of old school RPG's etc.

Anyway, BG2 is really hard and complicated. It is amazing how much "Stuff" they packed into those old games. All the spell Stuff along with Buffs and the differences between a Sorceror, a wizard, and a Bard...It really puts todays even "AAA RPG's" Kinda to shame, and i can see why the old Hardcore guys bitch about todays games.

That said, I couldn't make it through more than the opening dungeon in BG2, went to the main city, picked up a quest in a "Keep" and was thoroughly owned and haven't picked it up again.

Read up on how IWD2 is a little less complicated and more battle oriented, and that games is hard as balls too. So many factors you have to deal with. Barely made it outside the first town in that one.

Anyone else having trouble with these games that didn't "grow up" on them back in the late 90's early 2000's?

I never really use the extras. If I had the physical items, then yes. The artbook is more of an attraction than the guide. I still haven't finished the first game so I guess it doesn't much matter anyway.

Yeah, if you grew up with the older games, the new ones are lacking. Everyone gushed about Dragon Age, but honestly, the Baldurs Gate series was better IMO. There was alot of strategy and tactics involved in the battles, you had to have the right combination of classes, correct formations, and a pretty good gameplan to survice some of those battles.

Yeah, Baldur's Gate II is still the gold standard for me as far as RPG's go. Dragon Age: Origins had promise, but just wan't quite good enough to dethrone BG2 in my eyes.

The combat was good in BG2, much more tactical than alot of games today. The mods they have out for BG2 make it that much more tactical. But the type of gameplay of pausing and issuing orders and then pausing again to assess the situation and make changes might not be for everyone. Battles take quite a bit longer and the AI to control your other 5 party members isn't really that good so you don't want to rely on those. I can see people getting overwhelmed by the shear amount of spells at your disposal as well.

However with all that said, nothing like a battle against a dragon in BG2. Loads of fun. Also the pausing kind of adds to the drama as there are many times in the fight where you pause and you realize that if the dragon gets his attack off before your healing spell lands, then the whole fight could be lost.

I think there is a generation gap now. Those games weren't overwhelming because I had read all the manuals for the table top game as a kid.

That whole gold box series was pretty awesome too. I'd be pleased if they just updated that so it could run on windows 7 with updated graphics. Would love to play an updated Wizards Crown too....

                          Just bought off of GOG:
                          Baldurs Gate
                          Baldurs Gate 2
                          Planescape Torment

I use to own the original giant box version of BG1 and the regular version of BG2 (never played through both of them). BG1 had 5 or 6 cds with a massive map and a nearly 200 page manual, it was great.

I have sadly never played Planescape. Looking forward to it.

Make sure you get the high resolution fix. It is at www.gibberlings3.net. It breathes new life into the infinity engine. There are additional mods that can make the game interesting (improved AI in combat, new npcs, additional NPC banter, and so on). I only played the vanilla version of BG2 with the high res pack. Also for BG1, there is a mod that allows for improved resting, a la BG2. Resting and healing in BG1 is quite the pain.

I need to get BG1 and finish my play through on that.

Planescape: Torment is definitely on my list. I just picked up Fallout and Fallout 2 on GOG's sale.
