I loooooooooove Skyrim. Spent about 10 hours playing it yesterday. For me I enjoyed Mass Effect 2 more. Mostly because I love sci-fi/space more than fantasy games.

I like the game a lot, but I'm sure I could even call it the best open world game ever. Unlike Morrowwind and Oblivion, the Skyrim devs made the cheesy, cheap, boneheaded decision to add scripted enemy spawns into the game. Example: I fight and kill two bandits, and while I'm raiding their goods, three more bandits magically appear out of thin air and attack me. This breaks the whole notion of a world in which individual NPCs are alive and active, and have their own lives and routines.

Not just that, I've had to create my own house rules for selling items otherwise I become ridiculously wealthy in a matter of days. AND I've had to download and install a difficulty multiplier mod in order to increase the difficulty, given the devs removed the difficulty slider that was a staple in previous Elder Scrolls games. Some really poor game design decisions in Skyrim for a game of its kind as I said.

Talkin about San Andreas, Rockstar needs to release an HD-remastered version. That is my favorite GTA and one of the best games to me.

Re: Skyrim: best game ever made?

Skyrim is probably my all time favorite right now. I have not played Mass Effect 2 yet which I keep hearing how great it is. I have played Dragon Age Origins and loved it big time. No question the character development and story as well as combat are better than Skyrim. But (and this is what makes the game so incredible to me) the true role playing aspect is overwhelming. I am living an alternate life in this game. I am really getting deep into the game.

          For example.

I go to my home in the South in Whiterun after a long 12 hours of battles, dungeons, and adventuring. I unload my loot in my chest, I sit by the fire and read a book then hit the sack. I wake up the next morning and go through my log and decide where the world will take me next. I then prep my Destruction mage with fresh potions, some different staff and sword and dress my part for that day of adventuring. Will I wear my Archmage gear? Will I go Elven Armor or now will i be a Thief and do some crime for my newest joy the Thieves Guild.

I am now over 100 hours in. Level 33 and the only quest lines I have finished is the College of Winterhold and Markareth. I am on the Aduian Wall (sp?) in the main quest, I have only done my first assasination in the Dark Brotherhood, I have not touced the Bard College yet nor the Companions quests. I still have loads of stuff to do. It is like living in another life.

          Truly amazing in my book.

Another thing that really is fantastic is the music. they knocked it out of the park on that front.

I am running into freezing issues which are a major bummer. But it is not awful that it is making the game unplayable.

All in all it is my GOAT thus far and there are other amazing games that are close like both Batman AA and AC as well as Dragon Age Origins.

But Skyrim is just a world of it's own that is still filled with so much I have yet to discover. And this is my first playthrough!

It demands another playthrough with a totally different character build.

As much as I love Skyrim

Red Dead Redemption has my vote.

I dont see GOAT with Mass Effect 1 and/or 2. Played it and loved it, but I wouldnt see it on my shelf and think to myself, "damn I really want to play this again".

If we go opinion based then I would have to go with Total Annihilation for my pick of "favorite game of all time". For the time period it came out in and when RTS were at the top of the list of most played games when Warcraft, Starcraft, Command and Conquer, Age of empires, and the list of RTS's were the hot topic. TA came in with completely fresh ideas and pulled it of. New strategy with central commander to keep from being killed, but was the builder of all buildings. Then massive maps for the time period. Lastly, the coolest thing a game developer has ever done.......releasing new units monthly that the community help develop by sending in examples of ideas.

It won gamespots game of the year in 1997 and numerous other awards.

"The game was highly praised by critics and players, and won numerous awards, including GameSpot's Game of the Year Award for 1997. TA is still played actively today, over 10 years after its release. It won Gamespy's Top Ten Real-Time Strategy Games of All Time in 2004, leaving StarCraft in second place. It was also recently named to Gamespot's 50-game The Greatest Games of All Time list. The editors stated "It's not as famous as Warcraft or Command & Conquer, but Total Annihilation is arguably better than any other real-time strategy game to date." See Awards. Overall, Total Annihilation received metascores of 86 out of 100 from Metacritic.com and 88.85% from GameRankings.com"

Now if we go by a "technical" level of GOAT. I would have to say Mass Effect series is WAYYYY up there. The xbox hit Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic would be a candidate also. Personally I would have to put Batman Arkham City in that list also, but Mass Effect taking the current title as GOAT. Red dead redemption is not a bad choice also.

There is just to many fantastic games to name one the GOAT!!!!

Re: Skyrim: best game ever made?

In this generation the only games I would consider playing more than this would be the Batman Arkham series and ME. Considering those series are two games in and Skyrim is only one game, I feel like its the best use of $60 on a game thus far. There's just so much to do and the world is massive and amazing.

I never found RDR to be all that amazing. It was fun, but it never came close to giving me the sensation of awe that Skyrim does.

Loved Skyrim, but I'd take Mass Effect 1/2 easily.

I voted yes, but I also have to give a strong nod to Freespace 2 if we're talking most fun with a game. I loved that game when it came out in 99 (and for many years after).

It is hard to argue against it considering all that it gives you. I don't think I could ever say I have a favorite all time game. But Skyrim is definitely in that Penthouse.

Re: Skyrim: best game ever made?

I know this is an opinionated question, and I'm not bashing these supporters, but for me DA: O just wasn't up there. The characters did feel more fleshed out, but I liked the story and combat of Skyrim much more. After Ostagar and Redcliff (I think that was it), the main story quests felt like more of a task than anything. The Circle of Magi was a pain, and helping the Elves and Dwarves wasn't very fun for me.

Those quests stopped me from playing it over and over again. The combat also felt clunky, not to say Skyrim's is perfect either.

But I do agree that Mass Effect 2 is on the bumper of Skyrim, and I'm sure Mass Effect 3 will steal the cake for me.

I'm not even sure it's the best action-RPG I've ever played. I think that's Ocarina of Time, which is still VERY playable to this day and looks like it's the type of classic that will be going forward too. Skyrim is a phenomenon right now but give it 12-13 and I'm sure new RPGs will totally supplant it. Number 2 action-RPG though? Sure!

It's the same for Uncharted. I had many friends come to me after I recommended it and say that it was a beautiful game and unbelievable, but it just was too hard or not fun enough. Skyrim is a fantastic game, but it didn't really appeal to me. I can see how some people would put it as their G.O.A.T. game.
