A good fighting game to enter the genre

So I was thinking I was going to grab SC V because I really liked 2 back in its heydey but I'm glad I didn't pre-order based on the reviews and buzz.

The only fighting game I've played recently was Marvel vs Capcom 3, which I found to be very "busy" and had trouble figuring out moves; net result I was rather confused. Other than that, I did play WWE All Stars which I guess kind of counts.

I'm looking for a classic feel fighting game with strong single player mode(s) (don't care if there's a lot of them or just a really fun one or two) and a good tutorial system. I don't mind if its fast or eventually complicated as long as there is a reasonable pathway to get to that point. I don't like how a lot of modern games and especially fighters assume your tutorial was playing the last version.

I have next gen systems and a PS2 so if Soul Caliber 2 is the "right" answer to my question I'll go pick up a fresh used copy.

go on google buy a dreamcast, get project justice, the original soul calibur, and dead or alive 2....I'll even give you my signature Ein combo: up x, forward x, down-forward x, up back y, forward quarter circle x

Also for next-gen, recommend Tekken 6, the whole DOA series

The original Blazblue. Each character has a story with multiple paths,I'm pretty sure there's decent training and even if there's not it's pretty simple anyway. The special moves are even assigned to the d-pad. (Don't believe it's an option in Blazblue CS though, that's why I said the first one. Plus the story is shorter in CS.)

The new Mortal Kombat has the best story of any fighting game IMO. The learning curve isn't steep. The pacing is great. Pretty varied roster. Moves are fairly simple to pull off.

Yeah, Mortal Kombat has a classic feel to it. It's much like the old SNES/Genesis games and it's a lot of fun to play.

The story is about as good as it gets, for a fighting game.

Of course MK's story is like 5-6 hours. Blazblue is about 20 to do everything.

Re: A good fighting game to enter the genre

Marvel's the wrong game to get into if you're new to a fighting game as it is very confusing at first, due to having a lot of things happening all at once (assist popping in to help out a fight out from left field, overall game being very fast), even though Capcom has tried their best to make it more casual friendly with X factor and Team Aerial Combos, etc.

I'd say Super Street Fighter 4 is a better game to get into if you're new, it's slow as hell, you can play a basic Ryu or Ken, chuck fireballs and wait until the opponent jumps at you, fire that uppercut, repeat and rinse.

Storywise, I guess Mortal Kombat 9 would be good from what I hear.

Soul Calibur 2, I'd say, is pretty good to get into the fighting genre. It's not really combo heavy, you can hit a bunch of buttons and you can fly by. It has a really, really long Weapons Master mode that'll sink your time for a good 10 hours I think, maybe more.

Soul Calibur 5 has a deep create a character mode. So it makes for a pretty good party game where you make a goofy version of your friends as a fighter in that game and just goof around with each other. It has a pretty deep single player too, story mode, play against top players in the game as AIs, etc. Overall you could by pass playing SC2 and just skip to SC5 where everybody's playing.

Marvel is definitely the wrong game to play if you're just getting into fighting games. Depending on who you're fighting you can lose the game after one mistake.

I'd say Street Fighter 4. It's very slow and methodical, and it allows for mistakes so you have some room for error. The game also has input shortcuts in it so your execution doesn't have to be perfect all the time.

Mortal Kombat has a great story mode, but is lacking on the tutorial/practice front.

You may also want to look at King of Fighters 13. I haven't finished going through it yet but it features trials/missions (like Street Fighter 4, where it takes you through the moves and combos for every character), and the story is pretty good from what I hear.

KoF XIII is great but if you're new you'll probably throw it out the window at the bosses.

If you can get your hands on a Dreamcast, the original Soul Calibur was awesome!

                            Mortal Kombat.

Best single player story mode in a fighting game ever.

Also very fun online and against friends.
