Rumor: Zipper Interactive being shut down

Woah!!!!! if true.....but they have not done much this gen in making Socom 4 or MAG into hits.

    http://kotaku.com/5894692/rumor-soco...t-down-by-sony

Zipper Interactive, a first-party Sony studio responsible for the creation of the SOCOM series and PS3 shooter MAG, is in the process of being shut down, according to Kotaku sources.

Sony has repeatedly declined to comment on the matter to Kotaku this week, citing their policy not to discuss rumor or speculation.

Unsurprising, their last real success was 9 years ago, SOCOM 3 sales were below expectations and they've had a string of full on flops since including MAG and SOCOM 4. Unit 13 got some positive feedback here, but lackluster reviews were probably the nail in Zipper's coffin.

Re: Rumor: Zipper Interactive being shut down

Not surprised.........their prime years was Socom 1 & 2. And I said years ago when it came out, making MAG an online ONLY game will end up biting them in the butt. That right there kept many people from buying it, especially parents.

People need to realize, even though a good amount of people have some form of broadband in their house, at least half of those people don't own a wireless router. To a parent who don't game or really use the internet a lot, a wireless router is an unnecessary expense they refuse to buy.

I think the nail in the coffin was turning Socom 4 into another FOtM shooter. It seemed to alienate a portion of their fan base, and it was going to be an uphill battle competing with every other identical shooter out there.

I had such high hopes for Socom 4 and it turned out to be terrible.

Not surprising at all if this turns out to be true. Socom 1 and 2 were the best games they made by far and instead of building on those they stupidly tried to catch lightning in a bottle a third time. I caught so much flak from posters on here for ripping Socom 4 before it came out. How was I one of the only posters on here to not be able to see that that game was going to fail?

MAG could have been something but it was missing more than just an offline single player mode.

What else did they make? It doesn't even matter.

They were done when they announced MAG, nevermind by the time they released it.

Too bad, because they had some good ideas, but it's not surprising.

                    Well it's official:

Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm the closure of Zipper Interactive, a Seattle-based internal game development studio that has been part of the global development operation of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS). The closure is a result of a normal cycle of resource re-alignment within SCE WWS. Zipper has complete all work associated with its most recent project, Unit 13 for PlayStation Vita. Zipper titles MAG, SOCOM 4 and Unit 13 will continue to be supported, including the new Daily Challenges in Unit 13.

That makes me sad. Unit 13 is fantastic. I was really hoping for some DLC for it.

This does suck that Sony is shutting Zipper down, but maybe this might be good in a way as Sony can start having a few less studios so there's more focus on future titles.

Sad for me to but not surprising. After SOCOM 3, that series started to go downhill and Socom 4 was only a Socom game in name( they admitted it didn't start as one). MAG was cool but very niche. Handheld games were never going to be that big either.

Uhhh Socom 3 is exactly when they started going down hill, not after.

In related news, the servers for the ps2 and psp SOCOM games will be shutting down August 31. There are already unofficial servers set up.
