Re: What Classifies somebody as a "Nerd"?
I've always been fascinated by the terms nerd, jock, and "gangsta" and the way people associate that term with an individual. All throughout highschool I was called a jock because I ran indoor and outdoor track and played football. Funny thing was I was a hardcore sports gamer, and my friends who didn't play and sports yet shared my passion for gaming were called nerds.
And I never understood why nerds and geeks where thought of as "not cool", what's not cool about being knowledgeable in computers and other technology. Everyone uses it and it's a field where you can make alot of money in and it's not going anywhere (unlike manufacturing jobs).
But to answer the question I think it depends on the individual and what they think is a "nerd". Now that I don't play collegiate sports but am still into gaming (got into computer gaming) some may see me as a nerd, but my wife sees it as a hobby that keeps me in the house lol.Comment

I'm trying to explain why this is a really ignorant thing to say, but I can't put it in words. You're calling people nerds for being fans of films based on fantasy, I think? I loved Pokemon when I was a kid, and I proudly admit that. What's your reason behind being proud of not liking these things? I'm confused.Fans of Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Pokemon, Warcraft, and Magic the Gathering.
I'm proud to say that i haven't done or seen any of these. I guess you could call me a sports nerd. If there is such a thing.
I now realize i could be the most hated poster on OS.NFL - Giants]

I'm pretty sure everyone liked Pokemon as a child. I think he's talking about the 17 or 18 year old's that play Pokemon in the library at school. lol.I'm trying to explain why this is a really ignorant thing to say, but I can't put it in words. Re: What Classifies somebody as a "Nerd"?
This is the reason I never understood why people would call someone a nerd. If that's the case then everyone is a nerd. I find it so funny people knock on someone for loving the LOTR or Harry Potter and justify it by saying it's a fantasy land. Yet those same people play sports video games (which is a fantasy because you're not a NFL player or a GM) or play angry birds religiously. With the new cellphones everyone’s playing some sort of game, so everyone’s a nerd. And to question and belittle someone liking something you find uninteresting is ignorant.I'm trying to explain why this is a really ignorant thing to say, but I can't put it in words. Re: What Classifies somebody as a "Nerd"?
You'll have a hard time finding someone, from my graduating class, that didn't obsess over Pokemon, back in middle school.
I was never into Star Wars, but I intend to give the movies another chance.
I've read all seven Harry Potter books more than once.
How do I spend my weekends now ? I go out and socialize with friends/women and get muddy by trail riding with Jeeps and soon, I'll be spending my weekends on the lake partying down and wakeboarding.
I don't think doing any of those things mentioned really effects most people or can solidify you as a nerd.
I still stand by my original statement. I feel like a nerd means anyone who is passionate about something.
Hell, most of those things were becoming popular when I was a kid and it was the normal thing to do. In my school, if you didn't collect Pokemon cards, people would wonder what's wrong with you..Comment

Re: What Classifies somebody as a "Nerd"?
I think auchase's first post sums it up.
I know i'm a sports nerd to the point that I collect and watch games played 30-35 years ago. I'm also a comic book nerd as I read them weekly and have a vast archives of old comics (about 98% of Batman and related titles prior to the DC relaunch, Just about every Mad magazine to date and a huge chunk of Archie and Archie related comics) and i'm also an old movie nerd too.
I think it's pretty cool that everyone out there has an obsession with something that makes them unique and have a "voice" of their own.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
