Which Xbox Live Kit to Buy?

I'm going to get on Xbox Live within the week, so I'm about to buy a starter kit. I don't really know which to buy as the stores in my area still have plenty of the old ones. What are the pros and cons of each? Also, I'm hesitant to buy the old one because I don't know how to update it to the newest version. I need some help.

they should only have the newer versions in stock now. I know i've seen the new versions in the stores I've been in.

A couple of stores in my area have the old kit for $25. If you can find one, I would buy that. The only difference is the games it comes with. Once you install the kit, it will automaticly download all of the updates.

It costs the same but now I get more games (Mech Assault + demos). I also am thinking about Ghost Recon. What's you guys take on what is a better gaem on Xbox Live: Ghost Recon or Mech Assault?

i just found out that you need a credit card to play on xbox live i thought you just used your subscription (sp?) card and thats it. can someone tell me whats true?
