Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel (360/PS3)

We’ve got an exclusive first look at the latest game in EA’s flagship co-op series, Army of Two. Visceral Montreal is taking a new approach with The Devil’s Cartel, emphasizing mature storytelling over the series’ divisive high-fiving antics. The studio is focused on pushing forward instead of dwelling on the past, starting with two new characters, Alpha and Bravo. They’re determined to leave their mark during a deadly mission in Mexico, which is all possible thanks to the Frostbite 2 engine’s destructive capabilities.

Visceral Games has established itself as a top-tier developer with the Dead Space franchise, and with the expansion to the Montreal studio Electronic Arts has shown a commitment to elevating the Army of Two franchise.

“I felt like the first two Army games were good games, but they weren’t great games,” says producer Zach Mumbach. "They were memorable and they were fun to play, but they weren’t on that level where you’re going to tell all your friends, ‘Man, you have to play this game.” I think that Visceral being involved, especially on Frostbite 2, is just a huge opportunity."

The last game was incredibly fun in co op. My co op bro and I will get this game day one.

We were at the very end of the 40th day game and before we finished EA shut off the servers!!!

Just played through the demo and I am currently uploading a video to YouTube and will post here once it is live.

You have the option to go online and play co-op, but I just ran through it with a AI teammate. I thought the game was decent, I could see it being a lot of fun playing with a friend depending on how long the campaign lasts.

Edit: Here is the video. Select "720p" for the best viewing experience.

man, this game totally flew under my radar.. just played the demo with a friend and we really enjoyed it.. They let you play with gun customizing in the demo a little which is pretty cool.

also, Amazon has a $20 credit (for future purchases) if you pre-order.. I'm tempted..

Not very impressed by the demo but it is possibly better playing with a friend thru co-op. Thought cover system was kind of clunky..
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

                      Average in every way possible.

Despite being called Army of Two it's very rarely two.

Gameplay is just like Uncharted 1/2 where you stay in cover, they grenade spam, you run backwards and they will eventually walk right up to you to get shot in the face or stabbed.

Storywise I can't think of specific example but it's been done about a hundred times. The characters even reference how predictable this all is. A job to break up a sex trafficking ring..***n by a man named Batista of course...goes wrong when 3 of them elect to save the sole still living girl and 1 wants to take his money and go home, leaving her behind and having no confidence in the rookies. A fell swoop of instant karma later and they're 5 years in the future. In the future the oh so mysterious there's no way you can tell who it possibly is top lieutenant in the cartel "El Diablo" is killing T-W-O agents sent to protect mayor Cordova (of course!) before the upcoming election while you're trying to meet up with some also mysterious female contact that you'll never ever guess! Batista also working for the cartel btw.

Typical Mexico setting. Day of the Dead is happening, graveyard, churches, catacombs, mine area, hotel plaza with a fancy statue in the middle. You know how it goes.

Game was decently long but I didn't agree with the ending.
                      Spoiler

I think they could've extended everything resulting in a much better game by letting you play with the large ammount of other characters and seeing things from their view. You're stuck as Alpha the whole time. Could've done something there to seperate it from the pile of other stuff exactly like this.

Yep. What goh said /\. I hope they didn't waste many resources on this one. It's so generic.. bland. Enemies all look the same so far. Yeah, customizing weapons, masks, and outfits is kinda cool, but that seems to be the best part.

This makes for a really, really, decent $15 game. Maybe $22.50 if you have someone to play co-op with. Give it a few weeks and you can prolly get it for $20 on Amazon.

                        Other than that, PASS.
