Re: Planetside 2

Some brief new info.....and sounds like they're still in development.

Higby says that "designing the UI/UX to be more console-friendly and figuring out ways to better contextualize the massive scale combat for players who are used to more arena-style FPS gaming has been the most challenging" aspect of development thus far. "This is something we encounter with the PC version of the game, too, so we're used to thinking about it, but bringing this game to the console market puts an extra layer of importance on these goals," he explained.

EDIT: Additional information regarding SOA PC gamers membership upgrades which will be required prior to going to the PS4

               Shack News at E3

While the PlayStation 4 version of PlanetSide 2 isn't quite finished, given that the development team is still ironing out some UI kinks, the shooting still feels as solid as it ever has. If anything, I felt better handling a DualShock 4 when searching for enemies. The shoulder button control scheme should feel comfortable for any console FPS player, with L2 used to aim down sights, L1 used for special abilities, and R2 used to gun down enemies. It's easy enough to get the hang of that I quickly racked up a kill streak, something I once thought unthinkable after previously playing on PC.

However, the controls aren't quite perfect, which is where the PS4 version has hit somewhat of a snag. The developers point out that while infantry controls are smooth, vehicle controls are feeling somewhat clunky. While I witnessed tanks and aircraft moving about during my session, they weren't doing so very gracefully. In fact, I saw an aircraft accidentally plow right into a mountain at one point. Refining vehicle controls is among the PlanetSide 2 team's top priorities.

On a more positive note, PlanetSide 2 looks every bit as beautiful on PS4 as it does on PC.

The longer this takes the less people I see playing it with all these games coming out. I know they have a lot to do and still need to fix a lot of things but the longer they take, the more people forget about it. I almost forget that this was coming to PS4 and they are trying to have a full 2000 people on a server or map.

Ima play it with my friends when it comes out and still after. Just hope it everything they said and promised and just like PC

                      Re: Planetside 2

Today is Planetside 2's PS4 Beta testing. Wish I could participate but with new work, I wouldn't be helpful with the tests. Hopefully, we can get some OS'ers to participate and give feedback. Here is a Q and A with PlanetSide 2 Executive Producer Clint Worley with additional information.

What are the hours the Closed Beta servers will be up and running?

Right now, the current plan is to have the servers up from 3:00pm to 9:00pm Pacific Standard Time (6:00pm to 12:00am Eastern) on Monday through Thursday. Servers will be up 24 hours over the weekend, starting Friday at 3:00pm PT and ending on Sunday at 9:00pm PT.

How will the Closed Beta invites roll out?

SOE says they'll roll out the invites in phases, starting today.

"The initial phase will be a few thousand players. We want to make sure the servers are handling everything OK and that we're getting the information we need to make tweaks and changes, and once we feel good about that, we'll send out more invites to the players," Worley explained.

"We're going to send out that initial round, evaluate, make sure that we get the data that we need, and then send out the other round. The invites are being sent based on when the players submitted their beta application. The earlier you submitted the information, the more likely you are to be in the early phases of the beta. The long term goal is for the beta to be a closed beta initially to get the feedback and interaction with the players. And then towards the end of the beta period, we're discussing opening it up to a much broader group of players."

Is there a cut off date for when people can sign up?

SOE will keep the sign-ups for PlanetSide 2's Closed Beta open. You can sign up here.

"We've had a huge response. It's nice to see the support that's there," Worley said. "That's why towards the end of our beta, we really want to open it as broad as we can. Ideally we'd move to something more akin to an open beta. We just need to make sure we have the ability to interact with our players."

"Because this beta is really all about getting feedback from the players. It's less of a marketing promo, and it's more about interacting with the players. Not face to face, but as an example, when you get invited to the beta, you get a forum key where you can post, we can interact, tell them what's coming, talk about issues that are going on in the game, things like that."

"One of the things we're really trying to focus on is, PlanetSide 2 has been known for a while now as a PC game, and one of the biggest feedback we get from the players is we love the moment to moment gameplay, but one thing we're not sure how you're going to handle is the interface on the console. So we've made a lot of changes to make it a lot more user friendly to the console players, but we really need that feedback to make sure that the decisions we've made work well, and that everything is intuitive to them."

Players invited into PlanetSide 2's Closed Beta will have access to the forums, and they can post stuff for the developers. Anyone can actually read the forums, but only the beta participants can actually post.

What's the download size for PlanetSide 2's PS4 Closed Beta?

                      About 5GB.

What is PlanetSide 2's frame rate on the PS4?

Despite some confusion early on, PlanetSide 2 is going to be locked at 30 frames per second. 1080p.

"The game itself is pretty intensive, not on the graphical side but more on the CPU side," Worley explained. "We have no problem running at 1080. The optimization we've been doing hasn't really been on graphics. Most FPS shooters have a 32v32, but we have battles where there are hundreds of players, tracking bullets, explosions, all that stuff. That's the stuff that's really intensive on PlanetSide 2. The game looking pretty hasn't really been our problem. It's looked great since E3. But we're locked at 30, 1080, and that's where we'll be for launch."

On the bright side, SOE says PlanetSide 2's graphics are still comparable to the Ultra settings PC.

Are you noticing any dips in the frame rate?

In my recent preview of PlanetSide 2 PS4 at PlayStation Experience, I noticed a few dips in the frame rate. Here's what Worley had to say:

"We're not running into any problems in regards to frame rate, but that's one of the things we want to pay attention to in the beta. Take any game from the SOE library, the players are really spread around the world. Once the players start getting together and the chaos starts happening, those are the details we need from the playtest to see where everything stands. As far as we tested internally, everything looks really good."

What kind of content can players expect to see in the Closed Beta?

PlanetSide 2 offers players a total of four continents; however, the beta will only consist of one of them. It will host "a few thousand" players on the continent.

"Players should be able to get in no problem but we do have a queuing system in place," Worley assured.

SOE also has two additional continents rolling out over the course of the beta, as well as additional features and a tutorial area "because there is a pretty steep learning curve."

Will the Closed Beta be offered in other regions?

The beta launching today is specifically for the United States, but SOE is working on a European beta. Unfortunately, we don't yet have a date for when that will be offered.

"This initial rollout will only be the United States," Worley said. "The European beta is something that we're working on, and going through the submissions process. We haven't yet locked down all the regions it will be available in yet, but we're working on it.

"As a side note, moving forward, any updates that we rollout will rollout to all regions as closely as possible. So right now we have a bit of a delay between the American and the European betas, but we're working to minimize that delay."

Will American players be playing with European players?

No, they are not on the same servers.

How will PlanetSide 2 handle in-game chat on PS4?

SOE will support full voice communication among players. When beta rolls out, it'll have all the squad voice communcations currently offered on PC.

"One of the things that we're working on that's not in the initial beta is outfit management," Worley said, explaining,"Squad is real close, the people are directly with you. Outfit is more of a meta game feature, where you're controlling dozens or hundreds of players. That's a design challenge that we're dealing with right now.

"In the core game in the beta that's rolling out, there is full voice chat, and if players are close to you, they can hear you. You can also pick channels to chat on. If you've gotta manage a 100 different players and everyone is talking, it's not impossible but it's a design challenge."

What sort of PS4 specific features will PlanetSide 2 offer?

                      Share Functionality?

Although SOE has plans to support the PS4's Share feature, the functionality won't be enabled in the initial part of the beta. "We're talking about opening that up later," Worley told us. "We know that there are fans that are streamers out there. We know that there are people on Twitch that pull their console feed through their PC. So we're not worried about anything getting out there, it's just that we wanted to make sure everything tightened up on the Sony side."

                      Remote Play?

Remote Play is also something that will "definitely" be supported, but not during the beta.

"The interesting thing about remote play is, that's something that technically comes for free with the PlayStation 4 libraries. We went ahead and did some testing with the button mapping on the Vita. The Vita only has two shoulder buttons but has a touchpad on the back. So theoretically the touchpad could be L2 and R2 so in that sense, we wouldn't run into any button configuration issues."

                      Button mapping?

PlanetSide 2 will roll out with prefigured configurations. "So you won't be sitting there like, I want to map anything to any key," Worley said. "We'll have something like 'here is left-handed mapping, here's the normal mapping, here's the inverted mapping.' We're referencing popular mapping from other popular FPS games that I can't mention (laughs).

Thanks for everyone who submitted questions! If you've got any more, let us know in the comments below and we'll try to get them answered for you. Until then, hopefully see you on the battlefield!

Won't have the mass appeal as the cape crusader on June 23, but the game will be released as a F2P on the PS4 Tuesday. God IS A Geek put together a Preview for what to expect as new comers to the series. There are issues identified which is a concern but there's also a fun game to be had.

Planetside 2 doesn’t cover itself in any kind of pretentiousness. It is simply a remake of the 2003 original. But now it’s moving from its natural home on the PC, where players have had the privilege of fighting for the territories on Auraxis since 2012, to a box under the television. What it does offer in replacement of a massive intricate story and planet lore is a solid and well considered First Person Shooter where the word ‘Massive’ is a slight understatement. So having access to the Beta version is an interesting prospect, if only to see exactly what is on offer and whether it has a chance to steal players from a certain other spaced based shooter.

Jumping in, you are faced with the choice of three different factions to pick from, each offering their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. If you want fast flying fighters and rapid fire weaponry then look at the Terran Republic. If packing a punch with Electromagnetic equipment is your bag, then sign up to the New Conglomerate. If the idea of using vehicles with massive amounts of maneuverability is your must have, then the Vanu Sovereignty is where you should set up camp. It is only by diving in and getting your paws mucky that you will learn what best works for you. The Terran Republic was my own favorite, though more hours on the clock might have changed my mind.

The main aim of the game is to capture territory, by taking or holding onto designated points on the map. The easiest comparison I can make is something similar to Control on Destiny, though I wouldn’t suggest comparing the two side by side. The selling point is it’s scale: Planetside 2 has enormous areas to the fight over. It’s the difference between fighting in a paintball arena and fighting over an area the size of a city.

The main objectives are there for you to win then, with the choice on how you tackle them is left completely up to you. The areas in which you fight are given their own distinct landscapes and geography, with four gigantic continents ranging from swamp lands to frozen tundra and deep lush forests. It’s essentially a sandbox of pure combat.

Graphically, the game isn’t the going to take your breath away, though between the heat of battle or racing to your objective you won’t really have a vast amount of time to stop and admire the polygons and shaders. There are some moments that can be described as stunning though, mainly during the transitions between day and night as Daybreak knows how to create the most eye catching sunsets and sunrises. The individual soldiers are well detailed and you can easily make out what class has just taken you out on the respawn screen. The sound design brings an intensity to the game and really makes you feel you are slap bang in the middle of a war. Explosions are deafening, gunfire adds a snare drum punctuation, and the chorus of team-mates shouting out, trying to give orders, complaining about friendly fire all adds to the atmosphere. In the background, you will be given regular tips and help from the commander on what equipment can do. It all adds to the feeling of immersion.

For a beta there are many things that Planetside 2 gets right and because of its current state, it is easy to forgive some of the inevitable downsides to a game of this time. However, some of the core mechanics concern me. Firstly, the game seems more suited to twitch PC gunplay than is does to the Playstation 4’s controller, with shooting feeling a lot more twitchy than other recent shooters I have played. Destiny in particular wipes the floor with this in terms of the gunplay. Too many times, I felt I lost out on a face to face because my crosshair was floating around my opponent’s head like a halo as opposed to feeling well controlled, which can be excused if the respawning times were quick enough. Sometimes I found I was waiting some time before I could back into the fray depending on my last spawn point. This could be down to the Beta server though.

Other issues include the radar, which wasn’t useful for anything more than finding the nearest weapon console. I was expecting it to be able to highlight some kind of enemy activity but it pretty soon sat ignored in the corner of the screen and I was reduced to using my wits when scouting around for capture points. Also, while vehicles are easy to come by, controlling them to gain any advantage is a task in itself. The maniacal laugh upon discovering I could deploy a helicopter soon gave way into bad words and frustration and the occasional scream. The control schemes are neither very intuitive nor easy to master and raining death from the skies is something in which time needs to be invested.

Most of these concerns are lost in the joy that can be gained when the game clicks though, as there is nothing more satisfying than you and ten other individuals dashing towards an objective, covering each other, with the medics healing wounds and the MAXs’ leading the charge. This is a game about team-work, and that’s where Planetside 2 shines, and shows it potential to be a glorious addition to the Playstation catalog. It is unique in what it offers. Coupled in with the ability to tackle your objective how ever you feel. If the population increases, filling up the occasionally barren beta, it has the potential to be something rather special indeed.
