I think its safe to say that both companies make all their money off of add ons. Think about how many people buy an Xbox for the HD features then realize they need to shell out another $30 for it.

"Oh wait, you want the DVD playback that is advertised on the box? $20! Dolby sound for the movies? $30! Oh, and you need to buy the Digital cable since it doesnt come with the AV pack, thats another $20! Cha-ching!"

    Fool!

      Re: Playstation 3 concept art

I heard that the $700 PSX system is a PS2 system, with a hard-drive, on-board ethernet, dvd playback, a dvd-burner, and TiVo capabilities.

Although that price tag sounds expensive, it's actually on the cheaper side of things. If you have ever looked into a TiVo, you would know that that alone is an expensive piece of hardware. I think it goes for around 3 or 4 hundred dollars. If you get the lifetime subscription for that, than it is well into the $700 area already. On top of that you get a DVD burner which is still a bit costly now a days, at least $300 for the cheapest unit. A PS2 is still around $150, and the ethernet adapter is about $70. And the DVD remote goes for, what? $15.

So, the grand total for all this functionality $1,235 if you want to buy everything seperately. Now that's not worth the money or the space. Instead, you get one box with all this functionality, in one pretty package.

You're right here's a link to a Panasonic DVD Recorder with only a 120 gb HD. (Price $1,199.95) Hell, the current Sony DVD Recorder costs $699.99

Everyone has to remember that the PSX is NOT an upgrade to the PS2. It is also NOT the next generation console. It is Sony's attempt to package the multimedia experience in one box. The PSX will allow the consumer to get rid of their:

            3. PS2

The PSX will be a high end video component. It is not intended for kids. IMO it's meant for the person looking to consolidate most of their video equipment.

Well, there are game systems for people who only want that, and a PSX for people who want everything in one unit. Simply put, if you dont want "all that stuff" buy a PS2. Its not like you are being forced to buy the PSX if you want to play PS2 games. I dont see whats wrong with producing something for both crowds.
