WHo else has raised the bar?

    Madden (Sports)
    Myst (PC)
    DOOM (FPS)
    UnReal (Engine)
    Quake (Multiplayer)
    Everquest (MMOG)
    Tomb Raider (3rd Person Shooter)

    <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

I gotta agree with those. But what do you mean with Myst? You mean graphic wise, or puzzle game wise?

Wait, did Goldeneye or WCW vs the World come out before Quake? I cant remember. What I do remember is plying Quack. That games had the worst graphics and animations I'd ever seen on N64. Or was that Quake 2?

    <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

Quake definitely takes the title over Goldeneye (as good as it was) as far as multiplayer standards go. I dont remember there being multiplayer tournaments for Ferraris or people changing their official professional title to "Gamer" over Goldeneye. Quake also had Thresh, who IMO set the standards of how FPS control on PC should be.

I also am curious about the Myst comment.

I dont know if I'd exactly put Everquest as the MMOG one because before it, there was Ultima Online, and LONG before both of these, there was Dungeons and Dragons.

There also has to be some mention of the Sierra adventure titles like King's Quest or even Leisure Suit Larry because I believe these really brought some popularity to the adventure genre.

One more to the list that I'm sure no one will argue with me about...

    Street Fighter II (Fighting)

My comment on Myst stems from the fact that I think Myst was one of the first PC games to start getting some mainstream pub. People who knew nothing about gaming, knew about Myst. That's why I was saying that Myst kind of helped usher in PC Gaming to the mass market.

I get it now. I agree. But I dont know how Myst got all that attention. I think maybe because of the photo realism??

Hmm, cant necessarily say I agree with you here. Sim City and Civilization were always extremely popular for PC as well and they were released a couple of years earlier. I get what youre saying about the mass market appeal though I wouldnt place Myst in the same list as the other ones you listed.

GTA 3 is the one of the most overrated games ever (Halo might be close). What was new in GTA 3 over GTA 1 as far as gameplay--nothing. Absolutely nothing. There are basically 3 differences:

                        1. Missions have a little cut scene
                        2. Game is in 3-d instead of 2d
                        3. You can pick up hookers

So what's so special about GTA 3? Nothing. I could only play like the first 10 missions before I became totally bored with it since it was just like the first I'd played 5 years before. If anything, it's degraded video gaming--look at Jak II. The game would have been twice as good without the stupid city to fly through all the time.
