Major question! (disk problems)

What happens if your xbox says your disk is either dirty or corrupt? I was playing NCAA Football 2004 other night, and then last night it won't respond anymore. I am confused to what may have happened. What do I do? Please help me, thank you!

There was an article about this problem in this month's Game Informer. The solution had to do with putting tape on the top of the cd to help with traction when the cd spins.
