I got to marathon last night for 5 hours. It was glorious. Maybe some of you can help me with my next moves?

I got the flame sword to +2, opened the mansion from the map guy and killed the basement skeleton and got all the stuff in the house. Have about 5 effigies. Have not used one. My health has been 50% for a fair amount of gameplay. I joined the blue covenant. Got the stamina ring. Tried to kill the white knight for the lightning sword but he crushed me about 9 times so I decided to chill with that for a bit.

Currently at the forest of the giants second fire trying to defeat all the guys around the castle and I guess take on a boss there. Honestly, it feel like that is the only option I have. What I'd like to do is power up my character more. I have not leveled up anything yet, but he is a level 12. Its a PITA to kill all these troll guys with 50% health so Ill have to burn an effigy at some point. I just don't want to start dying all the time again and have it all for naught.

Oh, and I have zero souls and 1 life gem . So basically am posting all this to see if I'm on the right path or there is someway to get that 75% ring earlier. I believe I have to kill a boss where I'm at to get it, and my guy is just not that powerful yet so it is tough sledding.

For example, I have the soul arrow, but I can't even use a short bow, don't have a staff, and have zero magic ability (I'm a warrior). Is this something I should focus on so I have some long ranged attacks, or no?

No boss necessary. Instead of taking the path to the forest, you can go underground to the path it splits off to the left. You should reach the Tower's level. There are a bunch of big Knights, but you could probably run past them to reach a chest with the ring.

The game really opens up after you start collecting estus shards. The game is really, really hard without low Adaptability rating and no estus.

from Majula, go into that castle entrance that leads to the forest of Giants and look for another path that doesn't follow the water? I must have missed that, or misread what you meant.

And as for the estus. I need to look at what I have and even how to use it. I believe I got some in the well initially, but I don't even know where to find more or how to use it. I have not read too many guides, just now and then pop on here and read some reddit posts so I am freelancing a lot here.

You are probably more experienced than me but I just used trial and error and returned to my camp fire then Majula whenever I had enough souls to level. Now that I'm a higher level I'm not as cautious, but I do explore a lot. There is so many hidden items that can really help you get the edge. I have 6 flasks now, and +5 main weapons. Explore, explore, explore.

Yeah, I wound up looking a few things up. I feel like DS is one of those games that will punish you for missing out on something, and it's often that the window is short (ie a merchant leaving their spot). I'll usually know when I missed something, so that's when I'll look something up.

The ring:

I may be wrong (I don't know this game all that well yet), but I think it's the room with the puddles of water. There's a level to open up a door that opens up a new area with the ring in it. I believe it's on the right side of Majula.

You are probably more experienced than me but I just used trial and error and returned to my camp fire then Majula whenever I had enough souls to level. Now that I'm a higher level I'm not as cautious, but I do explore a lot. There is so many hidden items that can really help you get the edge. I have 6 flasks now, and +5 main weapons. Explore, explore, explore.

There are three areas, I think, that you can explore right off the bat. Forest of the Giants was not the first area I encountered, so if you're having trouble there, you can go somewhere else.

Get the ring then use an effigy and equip the ring. Also why not head to Heides tower those bosses are relatively easy.

Usually, amounts to the computer invading your game. They are one offs though.
