    Re: Day Z

DayZ moving to a new engine according to Dean Hall

I guess the big news that we’ve been telling here at E3 is that we’re actually moving to a new engine. It is called infusion. So that is going to allow us to do DirectX 10 and 11. It is going to allow us to do dynamic lighting, which means no more flashlights going through walls, proper dynamic shadows, stuff like that. So it really kind of opens a lot of possibilities for us and I think it is going to allow us to deal will a lot of those issues. We had to decide, did we want to do a lot of little short term fixes or did we want to focus on the architecture. Given the success of the early access we felt like we really had to invest in the future.

Q: With the new engine is it based on your current tech or is it a complete rip out of everything and rewriting it?

Rocket: It is a complete rip out of everything, but we’re definitely leveraging existing tech. So if you look at Bohemia as a studio they actually acquired a great number of other studios, so really were kind of looking around and taking up tech that is available there and mixing it into the engine, rewriting new stuff from scratch that we want to do as well.

Q: When are you looking at getting the new engine into experimental and then pushed out to stable.

Rocket: It will kind of come in a modular fashion over time.

      Re: Day Z

I went ahead and grabbed the Day Z standalone last night. I knew I wanted to invest in the title and better to get in early and cheap.

So I went through 6 lives last night. It was a great experience and a frustrating experience. Lets look at them.

Life 1 - So I log into the game for the first time, get the visuals set to something that will run decent(low). Then I hit the server browser for a standard DayZ experience. After a little searching I was in the game, which I spawned on the coast. I made my way for the first farm house I saw to find loot. This is where my issues begun, nothing worked! I couldn't pick up anything, couldn't open doors. I would hit the action button on the mouse and just zilch, nadda. I then alerted a zombie and allowed myself to be beaten to death.

Life 2 - I exited that server and found a different one with a great ping for my next experience, which I hoped would feature less bugs. So yet again I am spawned on the coast, but by a much larger city this time. So I start out on my slow quest of working my way through houses in search of goods to survive (this time everything is working as it should). So I find a motorcycle helmet, backpack, some can goods, couple soda pops, and a screw driver. Yet I had nothing to defend myself with or anything to open the cans, so I started scanning for a big building to do a lot of looting in. I then notice a multistory apartment complex little ways away.

I start going through room by room, floor by floor, until I reach the 3rd floor. I then walk into a room and laying on a shelf is a assault rifle, YESSSS!! Just as I am hitting tab to get it equipped, a guy comes running into the room. He must of been scavenging also and never knew I was in there. It scared the **** out of him and he runs out screaming. "DON'T SHOOT DON'T SHOOT, I'm Friendly, are you Friendly?"
At this point I forgot they had direct chat which only reached a certain distance, so I scramble in the control list to find the chat key. Once I finally find it I start running around the building hollering "I'm Friendly, where are you".......I"M FRIENDLY WHERE YOU WENT!". So I made my way to the roof and kept hollering until finally I hear really muffled "Why are you camping the roof then?". To which I explained, this is my first time in the game, I've only been playing 15 min. So he comes running up on the roof and we exchange some chat about heading out to find more survivors to party up with. I figure my chances of survival are much greater together so we take out on foot around the city.

I'm carrying a AR with no ammo, but no one else knows that lol. So couple min in we find another guy and run up on him. He is little scared thinking two guys with guns are going to murder his defenseless self, but after little bit of reassuring he calmed down.

So we are standing in a little circle talking about finding one more guy then we can go on some serious loot runs. Just then my screen goes BLACK, and it pops up "You are Dead". So I'm confused what the hell happened, then I hear the two guys start saying "What the hell just happened???" "OHHHH **** RUNNNNN THEY ARE SHOOTING!!!!!!"

So I guess you can still hear voices even when dead in close proximity. I'm figuring I was sniped with a head shoot and they saw me crumbled and they didn't know what happened until more rounds started hitting around them.

This was a extremely fun life and really showed me how great the game can be. Life is so expendable and permanent that sense of doom is always around. One single moment can end it all.

My next 3 lives I died once by a bandit, twice by zombies, and one just random death where I died for literally no reason. Standing in room and "You are Dead".

All in all I'm excited to see this game take shape over time.

I'm currently loaded down and ready to stay alive a while, as long as I don't run into bandits. Only thing I'm short on is .357 rounds which I need to locate.

Anyone want to team up, let me know.

I have the opposite, I have a ton of .357 rounds and a chest holster. I havent had luck finding any pistols with my new hardcore character.

I had an SKS and a Blaze rifle but my SKS disappeared so now I'm stuck with a Sporter .22 and the Blaze with no ammo. I ended up coming across a cooking pot with a burner so I'm now on the hunt for a deer.

Check the N.W. Airstrip, plenty of pistols there if it hasn't been looted yet. Also, there should be deer to the South West of that strip as well.... happy hunting.

Yea I located my chest holder first and then .357 rounds but I was short on space so I left them. About a hour later and miles away from where I found the .357 rounds I find a .357 on a shelf in a apartment complex. Go figure

Schools are notorious for having pistols, or they used to be atleast at one time but I haven't come across a school yet on my journey.

My big thing tonight was finding a boar grazing a field, got a bunch of meat out of the deal.

I keep switching from Regular to Hardcore lately. I feel like there's some sort of attachment to a regular character since you can see the gear. The hardcore I prefer because of the limited viewing so its not easy for campers to sit on rooftops or building corners in 3rd person and see around their actual vision.

                    Nice!

Yea me to, I like seeing my guy but enjoy hardcore too. I think in the end I'd rather see my character so I'm going to quit on hardcore. The small amount I run into a player is not enough to sway me.

Weirdly enough I run 3rd person in the open but loot and enter buildings in 1st.

What is your steam tag by the way.

Seems like the last few nights everybody has been shoot to kill on sight.... so frustrating.

I used to play this on the ARMA 2 mod, but have recently just purchased the stand alone. I'm not sure if anyone ever plays together from OS, but if you guys do, I'll jump in with some people. My steam name is the same as my OS name (Franko3219).

                            Re: Day Z

I just had the calmest interaction ever. I'm ran into Elektro and found a dead body on the NE firehouse with a Mosin and rounds. Took them and went into town. At the intersection with the convenience store and school a guy comes running out of the police station asking for help. I kill the 3 zombies chasing him. Then I went to shoot him in the head, but instead got a click. This guy didn't hear it.

We ended up running around and not really finding much. Then I run outside, a zombie is chasing him, gets him and knocks him out and I killed her. Then I sat there for 20 maybe 25 minutes next to his knocked out body protecting it and we talked and I now have a new steam friend.

Such a different experience than what I am used to. It was pretty nice. I've had "friendly" encounters before where they only were friendly because I caught them by surprise, but this one truly was a friendly one all around(after my failed kill attempt) and it was a nice change.

Last night when playing, I was trying to give this new spawn some fresh water and beans. While I'm talking to him, the next thing I hear is a gun fire and my screen goes black...30 seconds later my friend comes running up "Steven I got him.....wait wait"

SMH he's the hardest to convince not to play shoot on site... maybe if he kills me enough, that would change his mind? (He's killed me on accident about 4 times now)

My best friend IRL plays with me and my friend on there sometimes and has to be one of the most agressive, or least patient players in the game and will charge into anything and just makes a lot of dumb moves. He ran up to me once and said check this out, and then pulls out his shotgun and shoots me and I die instantly. Thankfully it was in Svetlo and I spawned in Berezino and made a quick run.
