Best mindless action hack n slash titles...

I am wondering what others go to for a mindless hack n slash fix. Forget story, I am only interested in the action.

For me Prototype 2 is right up there especially game + mode. Also the Dynasty Warriors series can be ok but can be too repetitive. Ninja Gaiden 3 fits the bill but I have had ongoing issues with the save file where it keeps losing the save point and also my dlc.

What titles do guys nominate?

Heard MGR was good. DmC Devil May Cry was cool as well but the hd collection is better and cheaper.

Hack 'N Slash typically refers to action oriented RPGs like Diablo, Dungeon Siege, etc. Think what you're looking for is a button masher. Something that doesn't take much thought or learning and you can get through with simply pushing one or two buttons over and over again.

You said mindless and I'm conservative, so I'm gonna say MGR.

Boy that plot is utter mindlessness it will make you a little dumber but the hack and slash is brilliant.

Yes perhaps button masher is more what I meant cheers. However, your mention of Action Rpg's has reminded me of Too Human which I thought was terribly repetitive and utterly lacking in level design but was still fun in its own way. The weapon and armour drops were addictive. That was a dungeon crawling action fest with rpg elements?

I have played a little of Dantes Inferno and that game definitely qualifies for what I am talking about. The only thing holding me back from returning to it is the lack of weapons. I like games with lots of weapon types. Ninja Gaiden 3 really disapointed here. I feel that the sword is way over done in action button mashers.

If you have a PS2 or Xbox 1, get Gauntlet Dark Legacy. You should be able to find it for $10 or less.

Baldurs hate is another one on ps3. It's purely jack and slash.

I put Just Cause 2 right up there with the Prototype games in the 'fire it up and do crazy stuff' category.

I only clicked on this thread to recommend the Prototype games, for me they might be the best game of it's kind this console generation - but you went and mentioned it in the OP

Along those same lines I'd consider Torchlight 2 for mindless KILL-ALL-THE-BAD-THINGS fun times.

For a touch more structure (story, blah) then I'd go Darksiders 2, Borderlands 1 or 2, and the inFamous games (PS3 only).

I know these deviate from your specific hack and slash category, but accomplish the same thing - mindless fun and games with very open or empowering environments. Easily some of my favorite games the last decade.

Bayonetta is so hard to come by. Have been really pleasantly surprised by Heavenly Sword. Good game, released back in 2007, great action, bit surprised there hasn't been a direct sequel.

Castlevania symphony of the night. It's hack and slash with some rpg elements. You can find it on the psn store. Or if you can find a used copy. It's a Psone game and one the best. It's a side scrolled though.
