Transistor arrives May 20 on PS4 and PC, $19.99

Mark your calendar for May 20, 2014. In just a few weeks, our next game will be available for the PlayStation 4 and PC!

We’ve been putting the finishing touches on it and think it’s just about ready.

This week at PAX East in Boston, several of us from Supergiant will be taking a short break from development to show you some of our latest progress. We’ll have a near-final build of the game running on the PlayStation 4, which you’ll be able to get your hands on at our booth 892. It was one year ago at PAX East that we showed Transistor for the first time!

We’ll have more details about Transistor in the days leading up to our launch next month.

USGamer: PAX East - Transistor Brings Turn-Based Style to the Action RPG

Despite its superficial similarities to classic RPGs, it combines elements of multiple genres to establish some wholly unique mechanics. It also emphasizes the enigmatic, free-running narrative style that made Bastion so remarkable.
        ...
The sword speaks to you in gravelly, whispered tones, calling your protagonist by name and urging her forward as bizarre robotic creatures materialize and attack. Along the way, you'll encounter citizens who appear to have been murdered by the robots; the sword knows them by name, too, and their souls attach themselves to the blade to grant you new skills.
Generally, though, using direct attacks proves to be a fairly ineffectual approach; despite Transistor bearing the hallmarks of an action RPG, you're generally much better off treating it as a turn-based game. By pressing the R2 trigger (or the equivalent on a non-PlayStation platform), Red can freeze time and queue up several attacks as well as the movements necessary to put her into the proper position. Once you've determined your ideal plan of attack, you can execute the action queue with the press of a button. Red performs queued attacks more quickly than individual attacks; while enemies can still move out of position as the actions play out, there's much less downtime for slow actions.

To balance out the immediacy and potency of the turn-based approach, Red becomes temporarily incapable of attacking once her turns is complete. You need to balance out the impressive effectiveness of using the attack queue with the fact that you'll need to scurry about helplessly for five seconds if your stacked attacks fail to take out your enemies in that turn.
        ...

It looks alright. I still need to beat Child of Light and Infamous though. Then with Wolfenstein and Watch Dogs coming out, I don't know how much time I could dedicate to this.

                    New Game+ mode

PS Blog: Transistor Out Tuesday, Recursion Mode Revealed

Recursion mode is unlocked after you finish Transistor’s story. You’ll then have the option to recurse through the experience, retaining your progression data — notably, your User Level and all the Transistor functions you’ve unlocked. This immediately opens up a lot of new gameplay as you’ll be discovering new function combinations all the way through your initial play-through of the game. You’ll also find some new surprises (that word again) in the content itself the second time around. Most notably, the composition of enemy forces you’ll encounter will be different — and it’ll be different just about every time you play. This means you can really sink your teeth into the core gameplay if, as we hope, you’ve taken a liking to it by the end of the game.

The Process, the enemy forces you’ll be dealing with in Transistor, operate as a faction. The different varieties you’ll encounter have complementary roles. As we experimented with fighting against them in different combinations, and in different locations throughout the game, we found a ton of interesting variety. We hope you’ll enjoy it as we have. If you’re familiar with Bastion’s New Game Plus mode, we think Transistor’s Recursion mode pushes some of those ideas even further.

First boss is great. The combat has a surprising amount of depth and customization once you start getting more Functions. You can choose which Functions to have on the face buttons and each Function has a primary and secondary effect, so there's lots of combinations to try. The music and art is so good. Overall, the presentation is amazing.

Still up in the air about this one and I'm not sure why - it looks pretty decent. Currently playing Child of Light and Stick It To The Man, maybe once I'm done those.
