Re: How can you tell the difference between a Thompson and a Samsung ?
I only know how to do it after you've opened the box/set it up.
Microsoft originally specified Thomson DVD drives for the launch Xboxes sold back in 2001. It was shortly afterwards, when people started bitching about the frequent lockups and/or "dirty disk" error messages, that the Box was also treated to two additional drives. These are made by Philips and Samsung. Of the three, the Samsung is supposedly the most trouble-free. It's also supposedly the rarest to find in a new Xbox, with 7 of every 10 brand new Xboxes still coming equipped with a Thomson, 2 have the Philips and approximately 1 in 10 has the Samsung inside.
Somebody posted a jpg over on the Xbox forums showing how to identify which drive your Xbox has by the appearance of the load tray design.

I can play cd-r's with my phillips drive.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment
