    Star Trek

Star Trek was released today, a couple of weeks before the new movie hits. I'm one of those strange gamers who actually enjoys games based on movies as I recognize what they are, and what they aren't, and I grew up playing movie based games at a time when they were considered the cream of the crop game wise. And yes, this was VERY early in gaming (Atara 2600 days).

I was eager to buy this today hoping that it would shed some light on the upcoming movie. I truly enjoyed the reboot and very little information has been made available regarding the upcoming movie 'Into Darkness'.

Great preview and TONS of screenshots and concept art here -- http://io9.com/what-does-the-star-tr...ny-o-477596217

Anyone else pick this up today?

Cheers Valdarez for making this thread. It is very hard to find any info on the retail quality of this game. Still no reviews up on Metacritic.

The gameplay footage looks pretty good to me.

    Hasn't released in Oz yet.

Really want to read some impressions from those that have actually played the game.

      Re: Star Trek

Caught me off guard there, I was expecting derisive comments regarding enjoyment of movie based games.

Played a couple of levels thus far. Graphics are good, and the voice over work appears to be from the cast of the movie itself. Controls are solid, and both the story/action have been fast paced thus far. If the first 2 levels are any indication, the game is very story driven, with more story than gameplay which may be a turn off for those who enjoy mostly gameplay.

Didn't realize until the 2nd level that there's a collection mechanism in the game via the trichorder which is used to scan people, plants, machines, and such to obtain both information that's collected in a log and experience points. The experience points may then be used to upgrade guns, shields, the trichorder and other items.

Due to completely missing the items in the 1st level, I'm going to restart and search for the collectibles as I want to read the Captain's logs (which I find interesting and somewhat humorous) and don't want to have to replay the game again to collect them.

As far as movie games go, the quality voice over work, and quick paced story is definitely a plus, the graphics are solid and movement and control seem to be good. The only negative I've seen is with movement of non playable characters which do some funky things at times, especially when entering elevators. It doesn't ruin the game, but it does break immersion during those moments.

        Re: Star Trek

It was pretty decent for a while. It was a not as good Mass Effect but ME is pretty great so that made this alright, but then...

A few overlookable graphical glitches turned into a lot of graphical glitches which turned into AI glitches (both partner and enemy) and then general gameplay glitches.

One of the lizard things got stuck in a computer and Spock just stood there looking at it. I was unable to hit it or do anything to it. Was able to move on. 2 rooms later Spock wouldn't listen to any commands,I tried to get him to do a mind meld and he wouldn't and then after going down stairs to the next part for a hacking minigame he entirely failed to cover me and wouldn't get in the posistion I told him to. That was all pretty terrible.

There's some downright awful texture quality in places. Some stuff does look nice so in general it seems like they ran out of time to build proper art assets or to properly test the game which is a shame because it actually could've been good. I have no opinion on Star Trek, know very little of the lore and haven't seen the reboot movie so I could only look at it as a pure game. Does have unusally nice hair. Not Tomb Raider nice but nice.

Gamesradar did a thing on it,don't know their opinion but here it is:

        <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/HYmCtcpM68c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Can see one of the graphics glitches at 3:07. Same sort of one I had but slightly different. Can also see what I mean about the textures, like the floor in that cave is awful and then the Enterprise looks decent.

What am I missing at the 3:07 mark. Watched it a couple of times and I'm not seeing the glitch. Can someone advise?

On the cave floor, it looks bad from far away, but when close up, you can see the ups/downs and more of the texture which isn't horrible IMHO.

Can you find/purchase/upgrade more weapons or are the characters stuck with one or two guns?

You can upgrade the guns, but only a couple of times, and they are across the board for all guns such as increasing the fire rate for all guns. You start out with 2x type of guns, but enemies drop guns and you can pick them up and use them if you want. Only found 2 more different guns thus far. Each gun has a normal and secondary fire type via RT/RB respectively on the 360 controllers.

The game is meant to be played cooperatively, and there are achievements for playing / solving the game with another player.

Just looks like they tried to replicate J.J. Abrams' lighting style with flicker and lens flare.

The insignia disappears into her shirt as she's turning around then comes back up. For me it entirely disappeared into her shirt after she turned around and it didn't come back.

Another common visual glitch I had was the reticle showing up during cutscenes. Yes it's small but it all starts to add up.

Kotaku did an article on the terrible partner AI: http://kotaku.com/play-star-trek-wit...poin-479430282

and here's the Giant Bomb video:

                  <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5J1uSKG0ZnY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Wanted to see if they had the glitch too but they start past it.

                    Re: Star Trek

From the 360A forum - The game is extremely glitchy affecting many of the weapon kill achievements as well as the revive achievement. Please be forwarned now that you may end up grinding hundreds yes hundreds of kills to make some of them unlock.

I have run into a problem. Playing on Hard Difficulty (there's an achievement for it titled 'Into Darkness'). The title is apt, as if you die in the space battle, the ships all disappear. Forcing you to start over as they are invisible, yet still hitting/killing you. *sigh*

                        Re: Star Trek

Finished the game on hard difficulty today. If anyone wants to play through on easy to get the coop achievements on 360 let me know.

Ending was abrupt. Feel as though they didn't finish the game and had to ship it.

Lots of bugs. Mainly with disappearing enemies and funky partner AI. Overall felt it was good for a movie based game. Disappointed they didn't give any insight into the new movie that's coming out in May.

I have no problem with third person shooters that are B grade games. Despite the reviews I will give this one a shot at some point.

Tell me though, does the tricoder/scan tool get unnecessarily over used?

It has to be used a LOT. It's used to find all collectibles (which have to be scanned), to hack doors/consoles, and to trigger specials like sound dampening for Kirk. Basically have to scan every area if you want to find all the items, even then I still didn't find everything in the first play through (and I tried to find them).
