If you're new to the series or fuzzy on the details, this is a good review and there's a video as well that summarizes the story pretty well.

Kingdom Hearts III is a dazzling display from Square Enix; the best game in the universe, and among the best from the legendary studio.

As far as gameplay/combat goes, let me just say that there are more ways to attack than I'm ever going to need. And to me that's perfectly fine, because for me, ever since KH2 fighting in this series has been more about freestyle and finding your own groove in combat than just endlessly repeating the same thing. Even on Proud, the hardest difficulty, I feel like I could probably do pretty well just endlessly mashing X to attack (and maybe an occasional triangle to switch forms), but that would be pretty boring. Switching keyblades mid-fight and using all of their second forms and abilities associated with them, using grand magic when it's available, and the occasional shotlock attack has been much more fun.

I will say that the "attraction" attacks really seem out-of-place though - like they were just something tacked on by Disney. I'm not using them - save for one boss fight that was something of a tutorial for them - and so far I've been just fine.

So I am really having a love/hate relationship with this game. At the risk of enraging the KH fandom, I think this is a game way past its time. The graphics are beautiful (even though HDR isn't supported), and I still love the Disney interactions as I'm such a fan. But the clunky interface, collect-a-thons, non-adjustable HUD, a sound mix designed for stereo systems (way too loud at default 10 on my calibrated home theater), mash "X" gameplay, and a convoluted absolute mess of a story really sour the experience.

I'm going to play through it, but it really feels like a game from ten years ago that has sat in the hopper too long.

Seeing as this is my first Kingdom Hearts game (Always wanted to try it except life and other stuff always found a way to prevent that from happening.), I had to rely on a video recap to catch me up on the story. Turns out the video recap wasn't enough, as I had to read a written recap, and watch the same video recap a second time before the story made enough sense before starting the game. Even after all that I still find the entire thing to be a mess at times. The character names and so many of them looking alike only help add to my confusion.

I am finding the story interesting and charming enough to prevent my confused state from ruining the experience though. Sora is as likable a video game protagonist as one will find. Fully invested in what becomes of his story and journey.

Oh yeah, I did the same, and I played the two previous games. I just think if that is what's required you are doing something wrong. Even the in-game lore guide is a mess. You meet Hercules and clearly have past adventures...but the character guide says something akin to "we've had several adventures" when they could add a paragraph explaining what they were!

Compared to Dragon Age and Witcher with quality in-game books, lore, and character profiles this game pales in comparison.

As I said though, the Disney charm does a lot in overcoming that hot mess. Almost done with Toy Box and have had a dopey Sora-like grin the whole time.
