Finally got a stable game going with Portugal. I've done one before as a colonization game, and I was hoping that this would be the same. Things however are not going to plan. First of all, Fez decided to declare independence and I allowed them to have it de jure. It took them another fifteen years to figure out that I wasn't going to fly my flag there again before they got the message. Idiots.
In any case, I know where Central America, the north coast of South America, and most of west Africa are. The first mission that I chose was to get up to 50+ prestige, and that took a bit longer than I hoped. In any case, things started to get hairy in Iberia. I was hoping that I could keep Castile and Aragon from fighting each other; a hope that was more wishful thinking than anything else. Castile was focused on ridding the southern part of the peninsula of the Muslim influence when Aragon found a claim to press. I had an alliance with Castile, but since I didn't want to get dragged into a war in which I didn't feel like fighting I backed off my alliance. Even though it hurt my prestige, it worked out in the long run as A) Aragon had help from the Crowns of Savoy and Naples and B) my map-makers made a mistake in the western part of Castile. While Aragon and Castile were slugging it out in Aragon proper, I pressed my claim, took Saltimaccia (sic?) and gained a new core province.
My new mission is to set up a base of operations in Africa. While I would like to colonize the New World, I've done that before and want to take a different route. My Portuguese Empire shall be more realistic as I intend to own the slave trade, much of south Africa, and expand into India... In other news, the borders in Iberia are not pretty, I don't like a Muslim nation bordering me, Castile is screwed, Wales is an independent Kingdom, and the Pope seems to die every year. Just another normal game in EU.

) for peanuts because I was tired of dealing with the threat of revolt and no tax income. It's not 1500 yet, and I have the entire northern shore of Brazil colonized and cored. I've been able to pour practically all my monarch points into tech/ideas and +3 stability, outside the occasional event. Soon I'll have 2 colonists through my ideas. I've sent ships into the Caribbean, and will be working on that trade node next.
