Personally I think this sucks. The HD is a great feature. I cannot believe they are going to expect you to save DL content on a memory card.

Besides just saving games and music the HS can also speed up load times and cause there to be fewer load times.

Microsoft is losing $$$ on the Xbox as we speak. SO for them to cut down costs would be a smart move.

Flash cards go up to what, 512 MB?? That's more than enough to store saves and downloadable content.

Since they haven't used up (estimating.) 5% (downloadable content that is.) of the HD currently inside the Xbox, it would only make sense.

The thing is, a 80 gig hard drive cost around 60 bucks... a 512 meg CF card is around 100 bucks so they would not be saving any cash.

but with a harddrive, don't you have a hard drive controller and other hardware?

True, you would need a hard disk controller. But the flash storage products from this company sound unique. They cite read and write speeds of 40-50 MB, well beyond USB 1.0 interfaces. So they may have to put in a special interface to make these things work.

Whatever they offer, if it's some kind of removable card, they can't price it more than $50. So how much flash storage will you be able to get for that price near the end of 2005?

Absolutely right. On top of that, hard drives are reliable, tried-and-true devices as opposed to some sort of brand new flash system that's never been used before.

If the new flash device is one of those large (GB's large) HD replacements, then fine.
But if they remove the HD functionality for custom soundtracks, downloadable content, etc., then this is a major mistake, and I think the Xbox will go the way of the Dreamcast...

The Xbox must differentiate itself from the PlayStation - not simply provide an alternative. In the current incarnation, that means superior graphics and power, coupled with built-in Ethernet and a hard drive.

If Microsoft doesn't make a similar leap with the Xbox 2, there will be no clear technological edge over the ubiquitous PlayStation, and they won't stand a chance.

However, if this flash device is, say 2 GB or more, and provides the same functionality as the current HD with a smaller form factor - we'll all be excited about it.

It's too early to panic yet... I think...
