Re: Child of Light
RPG Site - 9
The battle system is best related to the one found in the Grandia series, and will sound familiar to veterans of that franchise.
...
In more difficult battles, simply dealing damage isn’t enough to win. Some characters can significantly affect the battle timeline, and others are useful by employing status abnormalities. As swapping characters is effortless, it became much more engaging to employ the abilities of the entire party - healing, interrupting, status, damage – to react to every normal encounter. Sometimes things get a little frustrating on this difficulty level, but the penalty of a game-over is negligible as the game autosaves after every encounter and every pickup, so you simply start a few moments back. I suggest switching to the higher difficulty level early to get the most out of the battle system, unless you want to enjoy the poetic narrative without much conflict. In the end, Child of Light is a beautiful, tranquil title with an engaging combat system that’s a pleasure to experience. While some of the subsystems and exploration may lack a level of complexity, they fit the style and tone without being overbearing or obtuse. Child of Light is a fairytale at heart, and overly complex subsystems would potentially detract from the fanciful tenor the rest of the game offers. The combat manages to have a depth to it which JRPG fans will appreciate. Clocking at around 10-15 hours, Child of Light a wonderful bite-sized title to experience.
My advice for those with reasonable JRPG experience is to start the game on hard difficulty and get stuck into the battle and crafting systems right from the off.
...
While Far Cry 3's writer, Jeffrey Yohalem, imbues the narration and dialogue with a sing-song quality that suits the fairytale theme, there's little that is childish about Child of Light. JRPG purists may bemoan the relative lack of complexity and it would most certainly benefit from a more challenging difficulty curve to invite earlier experimentation with its rewarding mechanics, but the tone and pacing is otherwise well judged.
Child of Light stands as a wonderfully realised venture into unfamiliar territory for Ubisoft - and a welcome reminder that the industry's major players still have the creative flair to push beyond the lucrative safe ground that they so often favour to create well-crafted, highly-polished gems such as this.
Child of Light is a remarkable adventure. I wouldn't have thought that was true during the first couple of hours given that my expectations of what kind of game this was shattered when reality showed its face. But once I accepted the sadness that is so intertwined with every element, I grew so much closer to Child of Light. It's easy to heap praise on the combat because it's so interesting and engaging, and it's certainly a high point in this adventure. That's not what makes Child of Light stand out, though. Rather, it's how confident it is in its own feelings of woe. There are so few games willing to explore that dull ache that I became mesmerized by Aurora's journey, even when I needed to step away from her plight while I regained my composure. Child of Light is a wonderfully realized, somber adventure, and I couldn't be happier that such a game exists.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Nice reviews. I pre-ordered this on PSN this weekend and I'm looking forward to playing. Looks like I'll have to start off on hard difficulty.Comment

Don't forget (assuming you have a Wii U Deluxe) that you earn credit for digital purchases. I always forget that and love when I remember only to find free money.Comment
