I play a nice between between old and new. Playing a bunch of the latest games but also playing through Warcraft III and Doom again. Good times!

Yea, I play a mix, but mostly old. Not that much newer stuff appeals to me other than the odd title here and there.

I am 33 and within the last 2 or 3 years i have taken the same approach. I buy maybe 5-6 new, full priced releases every year. The rest are used, or received a significant price drop after a few months. The only full priced games I bought this year were Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, Last of Us, and Killzone Mercenary.

Been doing the buy a new sports title every other year plan too, and get getting updated rosters from the boards. Bought NCAA 14 new this year and NHL 14, but that was only $15 thanks to PS3 holiday sale and PS Plus.

Yeah, I mostly wait for games to fall around $19.99 before purchasing. I will trade games in to lower the price of a new game if I really want it (MLB The Show), but try to avoid paying full price.

Two things I really need to learn to do better:

            1. Wait to buy games when the price drops.

            2. Buy sports games on an every-other-year cycle.

I paid $60 for Tomb Raider last March. Got less than 10 percent into it and, even though I loved it, put it aside for BioShock Infinite. I have yet to get back into it. Now I see the PS4 version is coming in January.

A friend and I were discussing this subject earlier today. I'd even go farther than that and say buy a sports game only when I'm ready to move on from the current one I am playing.

I look back at Tecmo Super Bowl; I played that for a solid 3 years before buying another football game. Same thing with NHL 94 and MVP 2005.

If I could do this generation over, I'd have stuck with:

              NHL 10
              Madden 10 (or 12)
              NCAA 11
              NBA 2K11 (or 12)
              MLB 10 (or 12)

Instead I've purchased the "new" version of each game every year and now I find myself extremely burned out to the point I don't want to play a sports game right now. On the one hand that has been a good thing as I've discovered a lot of great non-sports games, but bad because sports games are my favorite and yet, instead of enjoying what I had, I just purchased new every year.

I really need to be better about that, especially with the limited marketplace, or I may wind up just not playing sports games all together.

I'm new to The Show and NBA2k just having played them the past few years. The only one I bought new and full priced was The Show 13. All the others I got for under 10 save 2k14 which I got for 15. Both of these game series have only gotten marginally better the past few years. I actually prefer The Show 11 and 12 to 13. NBA2k13 is the best of the series and I am glad I got that.
Hopefully the NG consoles will enable the devs to improve on CG efforts.

That would make the most sense.

I think every other year would be my personal limit. Uniform changes and real life roster changes would eventually get me.

It really frustrates me that I'm too weak to resist the new games every year. We've talked about it before, but looking back I probably should have just stuck with MLB 12 over 13. I thought 13 was an upgrade, but I had so much time invested in 12, it proved too much to just start fresh with 13.

I jumped into the PS4 pool, so it would make sense for me to try again with the every-other-year cycle. But I can already see talking myself into Madden 15 "because M25 was a first gen title."

Re: Any else play primary used/older games?

Yea, I used to be pretty big into sports games, but these days they pretty much lost me aside from the occasional game vs a friend.

I enjoyed it more in the sega era when it actually felt like I had a lot of control over the players. Feels way too automated now, like the games are 'playing themselves' somewhat, but I guess that comes with trying to make it 'look' so real.

There is certainly a financial benefit to doing this, but I find playing used games provides me with a much greater satisfaction in gaming. I think part of it was buying only new games made me feel a bit like a rat in a wheel (buy a new game, play it to a newer one comes out, then tell myself I'll keep playing it, but months later I would have rarely played it- see the guilt, gaming, and too many games thread). With used games, I have no sense of urgency other than to play the games I have missed. I have also found that most of the big multiplayer games that are older still have a lot of players- currently I still play some Halo 4.

Of course, this isn't a hard and fast rule for me. I bought Borderlands 2 new last year so I could play with one of my friends, and it was great. I buy Madden new every other year.

Currently I have an 360- this weekend I bought portal 2 and Tomb Raider. Just walked in the store and got them both for $30. Both are great so far. My next plan is to find a cheap PS3 and play through the sony exclusives- currently planning for uncharted series, Little Big Planet, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, and Last of Us.

                      Thoughts?
I think there are a lot of us out there in this situation. I'm 39, married, with two kids in elementary school, and saving money is always on my mind. I never buy a game new (EA football games not included). At a minimum, I wait for it to hit $19.99. Even then, I'll make sure I have another game to take with me to GameStop in order to knock the price down a few more dollars.

Last month I started RDR for the first time. Borrowing it from a friend who bought it when it came out and still had it laying around in his entertainment center drawer. Picked up Max Payne 3 over the summer at a garage sale for $10.

When a new game is released, GTA V, for example, the first thing that goes through my head is, "Cool. I look forward to buying that game 18 months from now for $10-15".

Part of it is patience. Part of it is money. Part of it not being 16 anymore. Part of it is lack of free time. So, quickly you will develop a back log list of games you don't even own yet.

Lastly, I'm a 360 guy, but like you, I'm very much looking forward to buying a PS3 just to play some of the Sony exclusives like the Uncharted series, Last of Us, Hard Rain and so on. When I can get the system for under $50 and the games for $10 a piece, of course.

Re: Any else play primary used/older games?

That's exactly my mind set and has been ever since I bought my PS3 back in 2009. Other than some AAA sports games (2K and The Show) I paid full retail for, I pretty much buy sports games (except for the Show) ever other year (NHL 09, 11, 13) Madden (10, 12, 25) etc.

Save for a few amazing games I wanted right away (Last of Us, Skyrim, XCOM and Arkham City) I wait....then wait some more. And usually it is that magical 19.99 when I pull the trigger.

I am backlogged with games on my PS3 and will be busy for a couple of more years.

As far as older games.....I do ocassionaly play them from time to time...especially with my 9 year old son. Games we have played together that are considered older:

                        Tecmo Bowl - NES
                        Tecmo Basketball - NES
                        RBI III Baseball - NES
Baulders Gate Dark Alliance - XBOX
Baulders Gate Dark Alliance II - XBOX
Legacy of Kain Blood Omen - PS1
Legacy of Kain Blood Omen 2 - XBOX
                        Jaws Unleashed - XBOX
                        King Kong - XBOX
                        Return Fire - PS1

Some games I have revisited the past couple of years for another playthrough:

Star Wars KOTOR 1 and 2 - XBOX
                        Hitman 2, 3 and 4 - XBOX
                        The Warriors - XBOX
Legends of Wrestling 1 and 2 - XBOX
                        Rocky Legends - XBOX

Other than The Warriors though....I never finsihed those second playthroughs. I love my PS3 games far more. For me being a 43 year old gamer.....I keep moving forward as games IMO are getting better and better and better.

I like epic games and for me they are just mindblowing today. And sports games....for all the nostalgia I see and read around here about last gen etc....sorry but todays sports games are incredible.....just incredible. And maybe that's because I am an Atari 2600 pioneer gamer.....I remember pure garbage that I somehow made fun. I remember NES Bases Loaded II...keeping stats in a spiral notebook.....I remember dreaming of what I play today on The Show and NBA 2k and yes.....even Madden. M25 is the best Madden....ever. Compared to Madden 93, Madden 99, Madden 05.....you name it. It's just better. It plays far more realistic, looks far more realisitc and for me is far more immersive (CFM actually attempts to live and breath and become your own NFL universe). I see so much reference back to earlier sports games......and quite frankly.....they play like old sports games.....easy to exploit, dumb AI, etc. Yeah some things like franchise features (cough Madden cough Madden) were better on the previous gen....but not the game play....I just don't buy into that. I am having way too much fun with M25 to ever play another version of Madden again.

                        Ok I am ranting.

Old school gamer here......who truly appreciates the new toys I can get....and looking forward to playing the PS4 in a couple of years. I am sure by then.....it will be awesome and I will be able to scoop up tons of titles.....under 20 bucks!!

I used to buy used games for the price drop but now I usually download them off Xbox Live when they are on sale.

I did just purchase Dead Island with all the DLC off Amazon new.

Recently downloaded LA Noire, Dark Souls, KOA Reckoning, and The Witcher 2.

The older game I get the most play out of in NCAA Hoops 2K8 with updated rosters. To this day it's still fantastic.

Re: Any else play primary used/older games?

I don't play video games all that much anymore, maybe 3-6 hours a week. But really all I play are old games. I have two games which were bought new within the past year, GTA V and State of Decay. GTA V was a birthday present from my mom, but I contributed a $30 amazon gift card I had won in a raffle that week, so essentially no cost to me. State of Decay was only $20 and while I never beat it and stopped playing it, I put a ton of hours into it so it wasn't a bad deal.

The last full priced game I bought was Saints Row the Third in 2011, and I regretted that a day later. I absolutely loved the first two games so I had no problem spending $60 on a new one despite not having read anything about it. I played that game for a few days and I just didn't like it at all.

Everything else is old, I play pretty much every sport game imaginable but the newest one is from 2011. I go through phases of which sport I want to play but I just rotate between these games:

                            MLB 2k11
                            APF 2k8
                            NCAA Football 11
                            CH 2k8
                            FIFA 09
                            NHL 11
                            (ALL XBOX 360)

I bought these all for $20 or less with the exception of FIFA 09 which I bought brand new when it came out, but I was in high school then still and had plenty of money and free time.

I also play games for the original xbox and ps2/1 from time to time.

                            NCAA MVP Baseball 06 (XBOX)
                            NBA Street Vol 2 (XBOX)
                            NFL 2k5 (XBOX)
                            Timesplitters 2 (XBOX)
                            MLB Power Pros 2008 (PS2)
                            GTA San Andreas (PS2)
Harvest Moon: Back to Nature (PS1)
                            Crash Bash (PS1)

I also have GTA III and Vice City for PS2 which I think I might play now because I'm on winter break until the second week of January. I'm also on a kick of playing NBA Street and those types of games, just having a pure blast. I think I'll have to bust out the N64 and play my brother in NFL Blitz and see if I can finally beat him. I've been looking for NFL Street at local used game stores too, but haven't found a copy yet.

Once I find a game I really enjoy I usually stick with it. Especially when I get into a franchise or dynasty mode, I have a hard time letting go of my teams so I don't want to buy new versions of sports games every year. And with non sport games, I know that there are so many good older games I haven't played yet that I couldn't get myself to spend $60 on a new game. I never really played non sport games, besides Harvest Moon, up until 5 or 6 years ago. So I still have a lot of games I've missed out on, which can be had for decent prices. Combine that with not having much extra spending money, I really enjoy playing older games.

Yeah looks like we are in the same boat! I do feel like my gaming time is precious, since I play probably 25% of what I used to.

I know there is a thriving used games market.....I think being on this forum is somewhat self-selecting to people who like new games- hence the most active threads are the new games. I have nothing against new games, in fact I come here and read new game threads to see what people think. I read IGN reviews and previews as well. But its all a plan for games to buy in the future.

Just finished Drakes Fortune on Friday, really enjoyed it. Have #2 lined up to start. And 3 sitting on the shelf. After those, its Assassins Creeds, Fallout 3, and Red Dead. All these games can be had for $9 or so on Ebay. I don't see myself needing to switch to the new consoles for quite a while.

The Sports games just aren't doing it for me anymore. They have fallen way behind in the quality department. I used to only play sports games. I missed out on all these great games when they were released. Its a nice break from the sports and no silly broken sliders to worry about.
