Far Cry 4 is a cross-gen game and im expecting it to look better on PS4 / Xbox One compared to PS3 / Xbox 360 but at the same time, it'll be like what Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag was a year ago.

Aside from Unity, no third party game will be truly next-gen until the games that aren't cross-gen are released and that starts with the Witcher III. Maybe, Lords of the Fallen but thus far, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Gamers are way too concerned over the visual aspect. If that's going to be the best thing about next-gen, then im definitely happy that my expectations are low simply because better visuals doesn't equal better gameplay, originality or innovation.

I'm buying Unity, Rogue (Xbox 360) and Far Cry 4 because I love Ubisoft and out of the nine games that I have finished from them, the lowest rated game was Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD at a 7/10. Of course, in fairness, playing Liberation after Black Flag wasn't a good idea. Other than Liberation, I have rated the other eight Ubisoft games at least an 8 or higher. Ubisoft has also given me my game of the year for four straight years since 2010. I'm not expecting 2014 to be any different as im pretty sure it will be Rogue or Far Cry 4 with Unity as the wild card.

To me, gamers expectations are way too high and the consoles aren't even a year old yet. While the first year for PS4 and Xbox One has been a disappointment, it's still been easily the best first year of any console release since Super Nintendo.

Look at past generations and ughhh...it's average at best. I would put the first year as a 7/10 thus far for me personally but that will most likely increase once I finish The Evil Within, Unity and Far Cry 4. Add in Mordor and 2014 is going out with an excellent lineup of games.

Of course, in the end, to each his/her own.

Once I finish The Evil Within and trade it in, it's on to Unity, Rogue (Xbox 360) and Far Cry 4. Don't know about anyone else but I'll definitely be good until February.

It's not just visuals fidelity though. One thing I was expecting from next gen was HUGE draw distances, but they turned out to be similar to ps3,360 distances. Sniper Elite and BF4 are my comparables - things like that should be a marked improvement especially if the gfx are relatively similar.

I'll probably pick up fc4 and my expectations in general aren't that high, in the end I like kick-*** games which can go from minecraft gfx to last of us and everything in between. ... BUT we should experience noticeable improvements in other areas imo like AI, draw distance, animation etc.

I agree completely but like I said in the post you just quoted, it's a cross-gen game and I don't see any developer going all out on games that are cross-gen. Have to wait until the games that aren't cross-gen get released.

With that said, im expecting Far Cry 4 (or Rogue on Xbox 360) to be my game of the year and the reason why my expectations are such for these two games is because Black Flag and Far Cry 3 were my game of the year the last two years respectively.

I was late to the Far Cry 3 party. I just killed Vas (sp?). I love FC3 big time. So FC4 will be one I will pick up at some point (after a big price drop).

So I've never played a FC game but super hyped for FC4...my question is, do the FC games usually hold at least some semblance of replay-ability or is it kinda like once you go through the story that's it?

I just want something I can sink some solid hours into....

You'll sink plenty of hours into FC. I played FC3 a ton.

Think of it kinda like a GTA or Assassins Creed. Very open world, tons to do and explore, etc. Plus there is MP.

Far Cry 3 was my first FC game and I am still playing it. Let's put it this way. If your a completest you will easily sink 60 plus hours into the game.

Yes it is, unless there's a PC version planned, where mods may allow 3rd person.

As someone who has never played a Far Cry game before will I be completely lost jumping into 4 or do they fill in the gaps a little bit as you go? I doubt this will be a release day purchase with Unity, Rogue, and Master Chief Collection all this week but once I beat the Assasins Creeds I'm interested in this.

Far Cry 3 was the first one I played in the series. I had no issues with being lost, you should be good to go.
