Re: Top 10 Games of the Year

      1) Bioshock Infinite
      2) GTA V
      3) The Last of Us
      4) Tomb Raider
      5) Beyond: Two Souls
      6) Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
      7) Saints Row IV
      8) Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy
      9) Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
      10) Kingdom Hearts 1.5 Remix

I think those were also the only 10 games released in 2013 that I've actually played (currently yet to play any XBONE, PS4 or Wii U games). I've bought State of Decay, The Wolf Among Us and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons in the recent Xbox Live "Countdown to 2014" sales, but yet to play them.

Super Mario 3D World would definitely be in the top 5 if I played it, possibly even #1 since Super Mario Galaxy was my favourite game of the entire generation.

Re: Top 10 Games of the Year

1.) Fire Emblem Awakening: This was my first Fire Emblem and what a fantastic game. One of the finest SRPGs I've every played. Insane amount of content, the sheer possibilities with pairings and mixing classes/skills is staggering, relationship system, kids joining your army, addicting strategy gameplay, good story and character interactions, and a great localization. I am now a fan and can't wait for the next Fire Emblem.

2.) The Last of Us: When it comes to presentation, I feel Naughty Dog is in a class of their own. The opening and ending are powerful. The interactions, staging , and attention to detail between characters are so damn good, especially between Joel and Ellie. Presentation is what a lot of people talk about with this game, but the gameplay is good too. It's super tense and a lot of sections are pretty dynamic.

3.) The Wonderful 101: This game is a throwback and love letter to not just action games, but games in general. Once I started to grasp its incredibly deep and imaginative mechanics I got such a feeling of accomplishment. After defeating the final boss I was overwhelmed with genuine excitement and had such a huge smile on my face. It's the biggest and most diverse Platinum Games title yet, and another gem directed by Hideki Kamiya.

4.) Shin Megami Tensei IV: A type of JRPG from a bygone era modernized in just the right ways and a worthy successor to Nocturne. Punishingly difficult first few hours, blazing fast turned-based battle system, demon recruiting, large scope and freedom once past the opening area, dark tone, great atmosphere and soundtrack. It's the kind of niche JRPG from the PS1 and PS2 eras that I miss.

5.) Pikmin 3: Like Fire Emblem, this is the first Pikmin game I've played. At its core it's an RTS, but the execution and the way it blends action, puzzling, exploration, survival, and time management makes it wholly unique. Its outer shell is beautiful and charming, but underneath lies a game that's pretty savage and kind of somber. I've never played anything quite like it before.

        6.) BioShock Infinite
        7.) Super Mario 3D World
        8.) GTA V
        9.) Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
        10.) Tales of Xillia

Still want to play Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Rayman Legends.

Re: Top 10 Games of the Year

2013 was an off year for games as far as I was concerned.

I did not buy GTA V, having never been much of a fan of IV. I did not buy Bioshock Infinite, a decision about to pay dividends when PS Plus gives it to me in January. My son and I did our usual last year/this year swap with me not getting the 2013 installments of The Show, Madden or NBA 2K.

Among the games I did play, I would first categorize retreads and rank them as listed below. I don't feel any of these titles moved outside their comfort zones at all, despite marketing hype and internet buzz.

Ghosts...much more of exactly the same
          NHL14...rosters
NCAA14...should have boldly put in the playoff system since they were ending the relationship anyway
Battlefield 4: "Lev-o-lution" went from oh wow, to oh crap this stupid flood level again
FIFA 14...see ghosts. But I got this as my first Vita game, so at least the touch pad shooting is novel and cool
Tiger Woods some number: improved control and I always play dozens of rounds of this, but nothing spectacular
AC4 Black Flag: The best of this bunch, I never got far enough in AC3 to experience the naval battles, so that was cool. A better protagonist and better trappings outside of the Animus

My true top 3 of the year:

Last of Us: what everyone else has said. Great story, tense gameplay, etc. Liked this a lot.

Injustice: Was my most anticipated game going in, and lived up to my hype. Enjoyed this a lot, finished the admittedly short campaign, got slapped around a lot in mp, and played hundreds of solo matches.

Personal Game of the Year: a total upset, something I had my wife pick up for me for Christmas on a whim but has completely taken over my life:

Rocksmith 2014: everything a game should be. Fun. Challenging yet accessible. Fun. Gives one a sense of accomplishment. Fun. Every day I have played I have discovered some new quirk or feature which surprises and delights me. An amazingly well thought out carrot system...has a one more try feel like Civ. I played until my fingers bled one evening. Then found things to do that didn't need my left hand. Clearly designed by people who know how to teach an instrument and how NOT to teach an instrument. Fun.
          Now playing
          too much
Nobody Saves the World, Total Warhammer3, NCAA14, ootp

Re: Top 10 Games of the Year

I haven't played many "new" games this year, surprisingly. I guess I'd go with what I did play.

                    1: Battlefield 4 (PS4)

Even for all the bugs and messed up Netcode this game is still damn good. Highly enjoyable and will likely be played for at least a couple years. Needs rent-a-server just to eliminate Flood Zone and Op Locker from ever being played again.

                    2: Planetside 2 (PC)

(Technically came out last year but I didn't discover it until July) This is a wonderful game with absolutely awesome battles that really nothing can compare too. Nowhere else you can get a fight with 300+ people at the same time. The combat is great even if I kinda suck at PC shooters and am really going to enjoy the PS4 version when it comes out. Sadly my ****ty laptop can barely get 30 FPS out, probably one of the reasons I have a .56 K/D lol.

                    3: MLB 13: The Show (PS3)

What can I say that hasn't already been said. It's simply the best sports game out there.

4: Civilization V: Brave New World (PC)

This was a game a swore to never like. The whole game on release was awful, completely ruining my favorite game franchise, but with each update and expansion this game got better and better. It's still not as great as Civ IV but give it 5 years worth of modding and I bet it could be.

That's about it for 2013. Played a couple more but aren't really deserving of any recognition.
                    PSN: KMRBlue1027

                    PS4 Games:
                    Battlefield 4
                    MLB: The Show (Duh)
                    Destiny

I only bought a few new games this past year and the only one I really feel like listing as a standout is Bioshock Infinite.

                          Splinter Cell: blacklist

was much better than any other game I played in 2013 that came out. I'm only writing that one game becaue I looked at about 30 lists and didn't really see it. It went under the radar - I've said before I hated conviction, but this was nothing like it, the levels returned to being awesome like the old originals, and it mixed that 'feel' back in as well, but also refined the combat so that it's not clunky when you're in a firefight. I hope they make a new one for xbone or upscale it. I'm telling you it was a great game!

NOTE: 2015 top ten will definitely have some changes to it within the next few months as im currently playing Rise of the Tomb Raider which could end up being anywhere from #4 to #1 depending on how everything plays out when I finish the game. Fallout 4, Bloodborne, Dragon Quest Heroes and MGSV:TPP won't be played until December and January. Did play 68 hours of MGSV and I can honestly say that it's highly unlikely that I would rate it any higher than an 8/10 for various reasons but it should still enter my top ten. Other games like Assassin's Creed Chronicles China, Axiom Verge and Shovel Knight will all be played eventually. LOL.
