    Rust: survival game

    Alpha $19.99 on steam
Must have for anyone into open survival

You start with a rock, from there you can build a axe, and then bow even a your own fort.

The only aim in Rust is to survive. Everything wants you to die - the island’s wildlife and other inhabitants, the environment, other survivors. Do whatever it takes to last another night.

The aim of the game is to survive. To do this the player should gather resources. Hitting a tree with a rock will give you wood, hitting a rock with a rock will give you rock and ore. You can then craft a hatchet from the wood and rock, allowing you to gather faster. You can go out and hunt a variety of wildlife such as boars, chickens, rabbits, bears, wolves and deer. Once you have killed an animal you can butcher it to gather its meat and skin. You can craft a fire using wood and cook the meat inside the fire. Then you can eat.

You face two major dangers in game.

Rust is a multiplayer game, so there will be other players trying to survive in the same way that you are. Unfortunately for you they can find you, kill you and take your stuff. Fortunately for you – you can kill them and take their stuff. Or maybe you can make friends and help each other survive. Rust’s world is harsh – so you might need to make friends to survive.

The environment is not kind. Bears and wolves will chase and kill you. Falling from a height will kill you. Being exposed to radiation for an extended period will kill you. Starving will kill you. Being cold will kill you.

If it was a single player game I'd be all over it.
As it stands (and I love survival games) the Online aspect isn't for me.

They have PVP and PVE servers, so if you don't feel like dealing with people you don't need too. I'm playing on a PVP server but its a friends, so I don't have issues with people hunting me. I'm currently finishing off my 6 story fort, very addicting.

Even with PVE servers ..you can still get your stuff stolen etc..and have to deal with people.

My wife downloaded this for her Mac and it doesn't run very well. She turned grass off and changed her settings like suggested but it's pretty choppy at times. I watched her play a little bit tonight and the response time was pretty bad. I guess that's a problem on with most people on Mac's.

The game looks really cool but they need to fix those issues. There are plenty of threads complaining about the same thing on the Steam forums so I'm sure it's getting looked at.

That being said, anyone know of some good servers for newbies to play on?

Game desperately needs traps and tower defense. Twice now while logged off someone has blown my doors off my house and storage barns and taken all my gear.

Until they add some ways to passively defend your crib make sure you enjoy starting over. I actually do because I don't find much fun in stealing all the gear someone else has collected. Don't see a reason to pay $20 just to skip 90% of the game's content.

But if something like this frustrates you then the game is not for you right now.

It takes about 2 c4 to blow up a wall or door, so it's good to put your gear behind a few doors. My fort in the picture up a few post would take 40-50 c4s to get my gear, and that's if you knew the correct path.

I agree that they should make it harder because it can take the enjoyment out of the game when you find all your hard work was taken away.

Also don't waste time on the spiked fence yet, I spent all sat building a 30 piece spiked wall around my fort, 400 wood per, and two days later it was gone from decay.

It is definitely alpha. I find any server with 50 or more people to really just be deathmatch.

What the two of you need to remember is this game is not finished yet. Fixes for those may be coming, that's the risk you take by playing an unfinished game.

I have Prison Architect (another unfinished game) and I only play it every now and again to see what has been added and fixed. I don't invest hours of time into it because it's not done and that would be a waste of my time.
