Re: First Look: The Last of Us - Single Player DLC
I downloaded it, installed it, played it and beat it in about four hours. It's worth every cent of the $15 charge. I will give it another play through, but it fills a very specific part of the storyline. Hauntingly beautiful at times, but I warn you that if you don't like the 'duller' walking-around-and-listen-to-Ellie-talk parts of the main story, you're in for a disappointment. The best moments of Left Behind are the subtle dialogue and different things you can do and say between Ellie and Riley.
Make sure to connect to Facebook! It's neat.
Spoilers, duh:
Spoiler
1a. Facebook. I love when games do real-world things like that, and I love the dialogue in that scene between Ellie and Riley. Their ignorance of the world as it was just a few short years ago is really well done.
1b. They took a very bold writing choice with Ellie kissing Riley. Let's get that out of the way right off the bat. I have a hard time processing this one and it's another reason why I want to play through it again. I say that I have a hard time processing it solely because I don't know how it should be interpreted, per se. Is it as it appears, a genuine display of romantic love? I think so, personally. I'm more than okay with Ellie being a lesbian; it's another interesting dynamic to the best-developed character in video-game history. If it's not romantic love, is it just an emotionally-charged moment between two confused teens? It's not like they've had a lot of time or opportunity to get to know who they are in this world. Is it just a kiss between two best friends? It's hard to decipher from the context. The fact that it was released on Valentine's Day adds fuel to my idea that it's romance, but that's an outside factor that I'm not sure matters. If it is that, it makes the ending extra tragic. My only caveat to the whole thing is that I hope Naughty Dog did this out of a genuine interest in advancing a character who happens to be homosexual rather than a play to the male-dominated video-gamer culture who may see it as an extraordinarily juvenile, "awesome girl + lesbian = way more awesome girl, cue Beavis and Butthead laugh." Right now, I choose to believe in a genuine love between Ellie and Riley and that makes both her initial departure prior to the events of the DLC and her impending death after the DLC all the more devastating.
2. The ending. Yeesh, what a downer. But what can we expect, given how feels-punchy this whole story is. It's good that they show us when Ellie gets her infamous bite, but I wish they would have drawn out the ending longer to give us the full effect of losing Riley. Make us see Riley's turn. Make the player kill Riley. It would be gut-wrenching, heart-shattering, and extremely powerful.
3. It's too freaking short. Playing off #2, it should have been about another hour longer of gameplay. It's maybe four hours maximum if you go super slow and explore everything.
4. Explore everything! The Halloween store is awesome and there are a TON of quips and things to see and lines to share between the girls. I love the Magic 8 Ball. Hilarious.
5. The Mortal Kombat-esque video-game sequence is one of the coolest mini-games ever.
6. They need to do a Joel DLC.The Last of Us is the Citizen Kane of video-games. It is better than every game that has ever come before it, and is the new benchmark for all games to follow. It is nothing short of a work of art.Comment

Re: First Look: The Last of Us - Single Player DLC
I can safely say without spoiling anything that Naughty Dog is more than just a really good game designer and now a capable story teller. They have balls the size of Jupiter.
I mean...my jaw hit the friggin' floor during that scene.Comment

Re: First Look: The Last of Us - Single Player DLC
I felt super meh about it. Im biased because I admittingly find prequels to be inherently lacking in suspense. They followed standard plot devices and ended pretty much how I expected. I would rather the DLC plot have built on the end of the standard game.Comment

Re: First Look: The Last of Us - Single Player DLC
What a brilliant experience. I've got chills, guys. I genuinely laughed during moments and even though we "knew" some of the events (it being a prequel and all), I still literally said things to my TV last night like someone was sitting directly next to me.
Like I was sharing the experience with someone.
And man oh man!!!....
SpoilerThose ****ing mini games were brilliant! Especially the arcade one. The way the background slowly faded to black behind Ellie while Riley is dictating the game! I felt like I was really playing it too! Great writing. Best in the business.
And damn that water gun fight! LOL! I got my *** handed to me. Looking forward to winning that one later on tonight! If I can!

Re: First Look: The Last of Us - Single Player DLC
I agree with you.
As Naughty Dog ponders what new IP or Series Continuation they want to proceed with on the PS4 here's an idea. And if your a Naughty Dog Dev browsing, I'll take a Project Management job.
An open spore apocalyptic world. New characters who meet different characters on your trek to a "said destination". Each "said destination" has a different story. The "Said Destinations" would be NY, LA, Chicago, Toronto, and Miami.Comment
