10. Super Smash Bros U
It's a little hard to be too excite about SSBU because of how poorly the Wii U has been doing. But this is probably going to be the best "party" game to come out all year, and Super Smash never disappoints.
9. Madden 2015
Do I dare? I guess I will. Madden '25 on the PS4/One did a lot to make me feel better about the series. Controlled players have weight to them, there is good line play, and the CPU plays moderately intelligently. I have a gut feeling that EA didn't get a lot of what it was originally hoping to get in for Madden '25, and that we'll be seeing a completely different looking game next year.
8. Dragon Age III: Inquisition
Why do I have a feeling this will be the surprise of 2014? It would seem not to many people have watched the gameplay videos made available, but they definitely should. The game looks like a cross between the original DA (in terms of story telling/environment) mixed with heavy, tactical combat ala Dark Souls.
7. No Man's Sky
I'm not sure I've ever seen a better debut trailer. Whether this one actually comes out in 2014 is anyones guess, but we'll have more information by the end of the summer at the very least.
6. Titanfall
I'm really not sure how it's this far down my list. This will probably be the first game to hit next-gen that will be innovative to its genre.
5. MLB: The Show 2014 (PS4)
Is there a single reason NOT to be excited about The Show coming to next-gen systems? I guess if I had to find one, it would be that SCEA has promised the PS3 to live up to similar standards as the next-gen version - where I probably would have liked to see the game feel and play completely differently. But it's too early to say that's not something that will actually happen, so for now, I'm going to continue to be really amped for next-gen baseball.
4. Destiny
The late release has quelled my excitement a bit for now, but the promise of a beta is enough to keep me interested. I think Bungie is probably the most innovative developer on the market right now, and Destiny seems to be an extension of their creativity. Hopefully the multiplayer functions well.
3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
I didn't love Witcher 2, but I did enjoy the narrative and setting. I think with the huge, open world and new combat system, Witcher 3 might wind up being the most critically acclaimed game of 2014. The only thing standing in its way are potential bugs or glitches, but I don't suspect that will be the case.
2. Dark Souls II
I think the only thing containing my excitement for this is the fact that I'll have to hook up one of my old systems to play it. I wouldn't say it's out of the realm of possibility that it lands on the One/PS4 at some point, but I'm not going to bank on it. Dark Souls was my favorite, and IMO the most polished game on current-gen systems. I see no reason why Dark Souls II won't have a repeat performance.
1. Halo 5
I'm a HUGE Halo geek, and even though Reach and 4 were moderate disappointments for me, I'm banking on 343 learning from their mistakes. As just about everyone else, I'm hoping for the return of a 1-50 ranking system. The series was built on competitive gameplay, and it's turned into a bit of a class based shooter that can't make its mind up on what it wants to be. I think 343 and Halo find an identity on next-gen consoles.
Honorable Mention: Sunset Overdrive, Watchdogs, The Crew, Southpark: Stick of Truth, Beach Boom, Minecraft: Xbox One Edition, Alien: Isolation, Mario Kart 8, The Evil Within, Dying Light, and Telltales Game of Thrones.
