Seams everyone wants to compare this game to Grand Theft Auto: 3 & Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
I think it is funny people compare this game to the current GTA - series.
One cannot compare Mafia on the consoles to GTA 3 & Vice City.
They are 2 / 3 different games.
Why you may ask? ...
Mafia on the PC was the first top – notch game in this genres.
Well the developers of GTA (3, Vice City, and the coming San Andreas) saw what kind of game play and genre Mafia's developers created (on the PC) ... and expanded upon it ... BIG-TIME!! … I can’t stress the words BIG – TIME enough.
Who knows … without Mafia, we might not have the great current GTA – series.
But Mafia is still a solid game on the consoles (X-Box & PS2) … if one accepts the game for what it is.
Granted if Mafia were released much earlier on the consoles (like a year and a half ago), Mafia would be looked upon much different.
While playing the game one can see this game looks and plays like a very, very, very early X-Box & PS2 game.
I do fault the developers of Mafia for the game’s shortcomings. For as long as this game was in development for the consoles … the developers should have (without question) ‘JUICED’ this game up for the consoles … because developers have the ability now to make games which use close to all the ability of the current console systems power and specs (X-Box & PS2).
Especially when it comes to the X-Box … the console is essentially a stripped down PC.
Maybe I’m a little biased because I am a La Casa Nostra buff. And I cannot wait for the game “The Godfather” (based on the movies), by EA.
With all said … I think Mafia is still a solid good game, despite the games shortcomings on the consoles.
I.E.: I bought the console version a long time ago, but it didn’t run very well on my laptop … so I returned the game and waited for the X-Box version. Personally I was not very disappointed … I think it’s a solid game, IMO.
GAME ON…
